Mahealani Richardson Biography
Mahealani Richardson is an American two-time Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter working for Hawaii News Now as the evening anchor at 6 pm and 6:30 pm. She joined the Hawaii News Now team in January 2017, after previously working at KITV4 News.
In 1978, Richardson joined Kamehameha Schools where she graduated with a diploma in 1991. She then joined the University of Pennsylvania where she graduated in 1995, with a Bachelor of Arts in communications with a concentration in marketing. Mahealani has been working for Shriners Hospitals for Children — Honolulu for the last 3 years and during that time, she has been serving as the director of communications and marketing. She has had the opportunity to appear in the hospital’s award-winning local TV ads, landed patients’ appearances on Hawaii Five-0 just some of the highlights, and seen physicians honored in the community.
While she worked at Shriners Hospitals, she had the privilege to do a number of moonlighting through hosting Insights on PBS Hawaii where she moderated forums for the Congressional races and Governors. After she had graduated, she secured a job at KGMB where she served as an associate producer and did her internships at CBS News in Philadelphia and New York. Not long after, she was promoted to a reporter position and also served as a co-anchor alongside Keahi Tucker. Furthermore, she later worked at KGW in Portland, Oregon as a reporter before she decided to return to KITV where she served as a morning news anchor for11 years.
In addition, Richardson’s most memorable stories are; interviewing Donald Trump, hosting and producing the documentary, “War with Iraq, the Hokulea’s arrival on Easter Island; getting up close to the lava at Kilauea, and covering President Obama’s first inauguration. For her report, ‘ Through the Eyes of Hawaii’s Keiki,’ she received an Edward R. Murrow Award. As of the moment, she serves on the boards of Ka Honua Momona on Molokai and Friends of Shriners. Whenever she finds time, she enjoys; dancing, spending ample time with her family, volunteering, and going on nature walks.
