Luke Dorris Career
In 2017, Luke Dorris joined WPLG Local 10 Weather Authority right before Hurricane Irma made landfall. Luke, who is originally from the St. Louis region, first enrolled in college to study cars, his other interest. In order to finance his education, he went to college to study automotive engineering. His entire life changed after graduating, and he got part-time work loading beer trucks with a forklift at a beer distribution warehouse. One hot summer’s evening while he was still working in the warehouse, a storm moved in and started to rain and then hail so heavily that cars from the adjoining state highway stopped in the parking lot to wait out the storm.
One of the cars was struck by the flying piece of the building’s awning. With a terrible groan, the warehouse built of metal partially blew down. Though Luke initially believed he was being struck by a tornado, he discovered it was actually a “microburst,” which is defined as strong straight-line winds exceeding 90 mph. Both interested and terrified, Luke moved to the University of Oklahoma, where he studied meteorology and earned a bachelor’s degree and also pursued a few storms when he could. He was also fortunate to work as an intern for Michael Armstrong, Gary England, and the Oklahoma City weather crew at KWTV.
Luke relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, and worked his way up to become KLKN’s chief meteorologist. He covered numerous tornadoes, strong thunderstorms, and snowstorms while he was there. Additionally, he obtained the highest accreditation possible to broadcast meteorologists—certified broadcast meteorologists—from the American Meteorological Society.

As they were resting and observing her, it so happened that her incident took place in that space.
Dorris immediately flagged down a nurse, who got Charlotte breathing again in a quick manner she would only breathe when she was crying, so nurses flicked her feet to keep her breathing until she was placed on a ventilator.
