Growing up in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, Turner, a Quill award-winning journalist, discovered her passion for journalism at RMIT University in Melbourne. She spent three years covering court cases and rural concerns like the drought at Ballarat’s WIN Television before starting her career there. Laura covered Thomas Towle’s trial while she worked at WIN TV. Towle was the man who struck and killed six teenagers in his car. Laura received an excellence award from the Rural Press Club for her detailed coverage during the six-week trial.
During her year-long tenure as a TV3 reporter in New Zealand, Laura covered a number of high-profile events, including the tale of the “accidental millionaires,” a couple who embezzled a ten million dollar overdraft that their bank had given them by mistake. In 2009, Laura came back to Australia and started working as a general reporter in Nine’s Melbourne newsroom. She covered the 2010 rural Victoria floods while she was living in Melbourne. When Laura became a crime reporter in 2014, she was able to secure exclusive footage of a drug-addled bus passenger attacking a bus driver. Laura was recognized with the prestigious ‘Quill’ award for Best TV or News Report for that subject.
Following the catastrophic Typhoon Haiyan, Laura was also dispatched to the Philippines, where she spent two weeks reporting nonstop. Laura provided updates from Kuala Lumpur during the disappearance of MH370. Laura covered breaking news for 10 days there, and when MH17 was shot down in London a few months later, she was there. She reported on the heartbreaking tale from Amsterdam, where the jet took off, for the next four days.
Laura joined Channel Nine in 2015 as a US Correspondent, working out of their Los Angeles headquarters. Laura has covered several major international topics since moving there, including the terrorist tragedy in San Bernardino. As the police chased after the assailants and shot them, Laura was on the ground and living on Nine in San Bernadino. She spent a week in the aftermath of the deadliest mass massacre in US history, which occurred in Orlando, and she also keeps a close eye on the ongoing US election campaign.
