Garrett was a football player in high school. He was transferred to Burbank High School with a friend when his family moved to Los Angeles. Garrett claims that despite his friend’s success on the varsity squad, his conceit and attitude prevented him from moving up to the junior varsity team. Garrett increased the intensity of his workouts and became a successful offensive player. Following high school, he played linebacker at a junior college in Los Angeles. Garrett eventually moved to Central State University in Ohio, where he kept playing. He was the team leader in tackles at one point.
Garrett thought of playing in the NFL, but he wasn’t selected even after having what he called “a great Pro Day” and working out for the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions. Garrett relocated to Los Angeles in order to pursue a career in entertainment because he has always had an interest in performing. He worked as a FedEx driver in the interim to help pay for his acting lessons. In addition, Garrett took up Slamball, a trampoline-based variation of football and basketball. He became the league’s top scorer when he was playing and was named one of four players for the All-Slamball Team.
After obtaining some clothing for Link and tricking Dave’s parents and sister into believing he is an exchange student from Estonia sent to live with them, Dave and Stoney enroll him in school, where Link’s odd behavior and exceptional athletic ability make Dave and Stoney popular by association, allowing Dave to get closer to Robyn and fueling Matt’s rage. Eventually, Stoney’s eccentric attitude influences Link’s own mannerisms, which causes a rift between Dave and Stoney. Matt starts a fight with Link at a skating rink and grows even more enraged after Robyn gets away.
When Garrett was still playing Slamball, he got cast in a One Tree Hill episode with a Slamball-themed plot. After that, he signed with an agent and continued to obtain minor roles in TV shows including Hawthorne, CSI: Miami, and NCIS, as well as films like Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Garrett was cast in two major roles in 2016: Mike Ritter, a Secret Service agent on ABC’s Designated Survivor, and Lieutenant TAO Cameron Burk on TNT’s The Last Ship. David Guggenheim, creator and executive producer of the latter, said they “needed someone who could throw President Tom Kirkman into a car”, but that had “an emotional core goodness”. Fans started to love Mike Ritter’s character, and Garrett stuck with the show for its entire first two seasons before it was originally canceled. Garrett announced on Twitter that he will not be returning to the show due to budgetary constraints, following “lengthy negotiations” after Netflix picked it up.

Garrett portrays Thomas, in the television miniseries, 1883. In the movie, Thomas plays a former U.S. Army sergeant from a Buffalo Soldier unit who is a Pinkerton agent. Together with Shea Brennan, he helps to lead the group. His presence deters Shea from taking her own life. The Romani widow Noemi and the expert frontiersman Thomas subsequently start dating.
In a flashback, Elsa Dutton witnesses a band of Lakota massacre a party of pioneers on the Great Plains in late 1883. She took one life before being encircled. Shea Brennan, a former captain in the Union Army, cremates his wife and daughter after they pass away from smallpox several months prior. When his buddy Thomas showed up, he stopped him from killing himself by telling him about a Pinkerton assignment that is being held in Fort Worth, Texas. Thomas and Shea leave for Fort Worth, where they watch as James Dutton puts an end to robbers who try to steal his covered wagon. James’s family, which consists of his wife Margaret, son John, age 5, daughter Elsa, age 17, sister Claire, and adolescent daughter Mary Abel of Claire, takes a train from Tennessee to Fort Worth.
While Shea and Thomas meet with a group of unskilled European immigrants who pay them for an escort to Oregon, James continues to confront unfriendly criminals in town. In a flashback to 1862, General George Meade consoles James after the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Antietam.
Shea, James, and Thomas get ready to head west in the present. Wade and Ennis are two cowboys that Shea engages to assist in capturing and escorting stray livestock. Tensions between the Americans and the immigrants increase as the wagon train leaves, and translator Josef finds it difficult to get his group to agree with Shea’s allegedly severe decisions.
When a group of riders approaches the wagon train, Claire throws pebbles at the leader, starting a fight. Following a firefight, Mary Abel and a few immigrants are slain. Together with Jim Courtright, Shea, Thomas, James, and Josef find the murderers at a busy saloon. After Claire kills herself, the party heads west. Elsa adopts a cowgirl lifestyle in the fourth episode and falls in love with Ennis. Noemi offers Thomas assistance and safety, but he declines her proposal of marriage. James and his family decide to cross the river at night in an effort to assist the immigrants in crossing the next day. For some of the immigrants, who have never swum before, the passage becomes lethal. After crossing, the group heads west.
After a food cart gets lost in the river crossing, the settlers are running low on supplies. Josef tells them that one of the thieves is stealing the remaining provisions from the settlers. James, Shea, and Thomas confront the robbers, reclaim the goods, and expel them from the group. Wade notifies Thomas and Shea that there are bandits in the area. Shea expresses his sympathy to Elsa, who is in mourning. At Doan’s Crossing, which is the Indian Territory boundary, the group pauses.
There, Shea hires Cookie, a camp cook, and Colton, a cowboy who takes Ennis’s place. Noemi tells Thomas that she loves him and that he must love her back when he gets her a mirror. Moreover, James breaks up a confrontation that ensues when Elsa confronts two men who are catcalling and pulls her revolver on them. Margaret fights with James about how Elsa’s travel is altering her after getting wasted with Carolyn, a local shopkeeper.
