Ken Rice Biography
Ken Rice is an American anchor and reporter working for KDKA as the co-anchor of the weeknight newscast at 5 pm and 11 pm. He joined the KDKA news team in 1994.
Ken Rice Career
While serving as a reporter, Ken has covered Hurricane Hugo, the White House, Super Bowls XXX in Phoenix, inspected the hanging chads in the disputed presidential election in Florida, and XL in Detroit. The CBS network and Canadian CBC network carried Rice’s reports on the US Air Flight 427 crash in 1994, as it approached Pittsburgh. In addition, Ken was among the few local journalists who reported after a shooting spree in Pittsburgh’s suburbs in 2000.

Rice is a national award-winning journalist who began serving as the KDKA News at 5 co-anchor in 1995, and the 11 pm co-anchor in 1999. Ken also serves as a co-host on KDKA during the Sunday morning public affairs program The KD/PG Sunday Edition. In addition, he has served as a moderator of debates among candidates for; Governor of Pennsylvania, Mayor of Pittsburgh, U.S. House, Allegheny County Executive, and U.S. Senate during the first 11 seasons of the show. He also served as the host of KDKA’s high school quiz program, known as Hometown HiQ.
Prior to joining the KDKA news team, he worked at WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh where he worked as an anchor and reporter. While he worked at WTAE-TV, he assisted in launching the station’s 5 pm newscast alongside Sally Wiggin. Chicago is Ken’s native home and he attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he studied in its School of Journalism. Rice started his journalism career while he was still at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He worked on the statewide Wisconsin Public Radio network where he served as an anchor and reporter. Later on, he shifted to television and worked at WISC-TV in Madison as an evening anchor.
Furthermore, while working for KDKA, Ken has covered numerous live; breaking news stories, the protests at the G-20 Summit, many Stanley Cup and Super Bowl championship parades, notably the Quecreek mine rescue in 2002, the tragedy at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, and the police shootings in Stanton Heights in 2009. In addition, he has received local, national, and state awards for his journalism excellence.

A number of awards Rice has received a national first-place Associated Press award. The award was presented to him for an investigation he did entitled Harrisburg Paydirt. In the Harrisburg Paydirt investigation, Ken exposed Pennsylvania legislators’ lucrative, taxpayer-funded perks. In addition, for Ken’s investigative reporting, the Radio-Television News Directors Association awarded him, and The Pittsburgh Press Club also awarded him with the Golden Quill Awards.
He is also an active volunteer in the community, as he has developed and lectured at Point Park University a television news reporting course. He also gets calls from community organizations and local schools to speak. Ken has been an Honorary Chair of Pittsburgh’s annual MS Walk, and he has served on the board of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. In addition, he has served as a chair of the advisory board of the volunteer service organization Pittsburgh Cares.
Furthermore, Rice is a member of the board of advisers of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. Ken is also a member of the board of the Southwestern PA chapter of The American Red Cross. He has also worked for other charitable organizations such as; the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Hunger Awareness Day Award was presented to Rice in 2007, by the Food Bank for his contributions.
