Ken Bastida Biography
Ken Bastida is an American six-time Emmy award-winning anchor who is currently working at KPIX-TV. In addition, he joined the KPIX 5 news team in 1990.
Ken Bastida Career
San Francisco is his native home and he attended El Camino High in South San Francisco this was also where his love for broadcasting began. He was a telecommunication student thus he was allowed to take home a camera. Furthermore, he attended San Francisco State University where he graduated proudly with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communications. Later on, in 2007, he was inducted into the University’s Alumni Hall of Fame.
During his undergraduate years, he was able to secure a job at KFRC Radio where he worked his way up from the mailroom to the newsroom. He began by recording simple voiceovers for the Sales Department before finally, producing his first radio story for the News Department. Eventually, he was able to secure on-air jobs at a number of Bay Area radio stations inclusive of KCBS Radio, K101, KMEL, and KGO.
For his contributions to KCBS Radio during the ’89 Loma Prieta earthquake, he was awarded the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award in 1990. Additionally, he hosted HGTV’s “Landscape Smart” where he guided homeowners in trying to boost their curb appeal for four seasons.
While he has been working at KPIX-5 as an anchor and reporter, he has been awarded six local Emmy awards and fifteen Emmy nominations by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, he has also been honored for his outstanding achievement in “continuing coverage” for his series, “Inside the Middle East.” Furthermore, his outstanding work has also been recognized by the Peninsula Press Club, the Radio and Television News Directors Association, and the Associated Press.
In his line of duty, he has been privileged to travel the world, and his most memorable reporting trips include his journey to the Middle East where he covered the Intifada, the building of Israel’s separation border in East Jerusalem, and the West Bank. Furthermore, he covered Hurricane Iniki which is known to be the most powerful hurricane to strike Hawaii in recorded history in 1988. Prior to also traveling to the Mojave Desert when it was designated a National Park Preserve.
In addition, he has covered KPIX 5 major news events including; the Oakland Ghost Ship fire, special coverage of the San Bruno gas explosion, and extended live coverage on September 11th. Furthermore, he co-anchored the station’s coverage of the Giants World Series parades prior to anchoring the days leading up to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara live from San Francisco’s Super Bowl City. During his leisure time, he enjoys assisting friends and family with home remodeling projects, spending time with his grandchildren, cooking, and tinkering with classic cars. His hobbies include tinkering with classic cars and cooking. Ken and his wife have two sons, a daughter, and two cats named Bob and Sister. He enjoys spending time with his grandchildren.
