Kelly Vaughen Biography
Kelly Vaughen is an American anchor and reporter working for CBS Detroit as a weekend evening anchor and reporter. Vaughen joined the CBS Detroit team in February 2023, after previously working for KMYU.
Vaughen’s native home is in Northern Virginia, and while growing up, she was a competitive figure skater, and she wrote for her high school newspaper. She attended Hofstra University in Long Island, New York for her undergraduate degree and earned a major in journalism. While Kelly was at Hofstra University, she was a captain of their national championship-winning dance team. In addition, she later studied at American University, in Washington D.C. where she graduated in 2017, with a master’s degree in journalism and public affairs.
Prior to relocating to Detroit, Vaughen worked in Salt Lake City, Utah where she served as a reporter at KMYU. While she was there, she covered many high-profile crimes, such as the search for Gabby Petito, and the case of “Doomsday Mom” Lori Vallow. During the Salt Lake City riot in May 2020, Kelly did live reports for eight consecutive hours. In addition, she extensively covered the underground world of human trafficking in Utah. Vaughen has also reported from the frontlines of natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, avalanches, and windstorms.
Furthermore, Kelle traveled to Ukraine in 2022, where she reported on the evacuation of high-risk Ukrainian orphans amid the war with Russia. Prior to joining Utah, Vaughen worked in Huntsville, Alabama at WHNT where she covered everything from education to politics to tornados and the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. Prior to Kelly’s journalism career, she was a professional dancer who danced for the NFL team the New York Jets and the Washington Wizards.
