Kelly Smith Biography

Kelly Smith is an English studio analyst, coach and retired striker who had three stints with the FA WSL team Arsenal Ladies. She joined the FOX Sports news team in December 2014, as a studio analyst.

Kelly Smith Career

Growing up in Watford’s Garston area, Smith, a former English football forward, initially played on boys’ teams until the age of seven. Despite being the top goalscorer, she was expelled from Garston Boys Club due to complaints from the parents of her male opponents. Continuing her football journey with Pinner Girls, a team organized by her father, she honed her skills at Wembley Ladies and made her senior debut during the 1994–95 season. In August 1995, Pete Davies, writing for The Independent, hailed her as the “lethally quick, bountifully gifted” standout prospect in women’s football. Transitioning to Arsenal Ladies in the 1996–97 season, she played a pivotal role in securing the Premier League title by scoring two goals and assisting in a 3–0 victory over Liverpool. Despite spending the year at West Herts College, she later transferred to Seton Hall University in the United States in 1997.

Embracing her role as a student-athlete at Seton Hall, she made significant contributions to the Seton Hall Pirates from 1997 to 1999. In her debut year, she set scoring records for the Big East Conference, earning the unique distinction of being both the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. She continued her remarkable form in the subsequent two seasons, leading not only the Big East but the entire NCAA Division I in scoring. Named Big East Offensive Player of the Year in both years, she left an enduring legacy at Seton Hall, with the university retiring her number 6 shirt – a first for a Seton Hall athlete outside of basketball. Over her three years, she established school records with 76 goals and 174 points in just 51 matches. Following her record-breaking stint at Seton Hall University, Smith transitioned to professional soccer, joining the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) franchise Philadelphia Charge.

After a successful period back with Arsenal, during which she contributed to the team’s 2007 UEFA Women’s Cup victory, she was enticed back to the United States. This time, she signed a professional contract with the Boston Breakers in the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league. Throughout her career, she earned a total of 117 caps for the England national team, making her debut in 1995. Despite facing significant injuries, she became England’s second-highest goalscorer with an impressive tally of 46 goals. Upon departing from the Boston Breakers, she turned down offers from clubs in Sweden and Germany to make a return to Arsenal for the third time. However, her arrival was marred by a stress fracture she acquired during the 2012 Cyprus Cup. Unfortunately, she further aggravated the injury while kicking a ball during a promotional video shoot, neglecting the protective footwear instructions provided.

Smith ventured into television, making her debut on FOX Sports in December 2014. Further, she expanded her involvement in football by providing commentary during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In April 2021, she collaborated with fellow British Olympians Nicola Adams and Greg Rutherford, along with fitness instructor Mr Motivator, to launch the ‘Energy Fit for the Future’ campaign by Smart Energy GB. The campaign aimed to encourage people to install smart meters in their homes. Transitioning into coaching, it was announced in March 2023 that she would return to Arsenal to coach at the Women’s Academy while pursuing her UEFA A Licence coaching badge. Subsequently, in April 2023, it was revealed that she had joined the Arsenal Women’s first-team coaching setup until the conclusion of the 2022/23 season. In the 2008 Birthday Honours, Smith was honored with the appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
