Julie Nelson is an American anchor working for KARE 11 as an evening news co-anchor of KARE 11 News at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. every weeknight. She joined the KARE 11 news team in September 2003, after previously working for KSTP-TVKSTP-TV.
Nelson earned her Bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and History from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Commencing her career at KARE-TV in September 2003, she presently serves as the anchor for the 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts. Prior to joining KARE-TV, she held anchor positions for the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts at KSTP channel 5. Here, she was recognized as the “Best Newcomer” by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine shortly after her arrival. Within a year, she was also featured in the magazine’s list of the area’s “One Hundred People to Watch.” She has received several accolades, including a regional Emmy for anchoring, a Regional Murrow award, an Eric Sevareid award, and three “Best TV Newscaster” Awards from City Pages.
She spent her formative years in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, graduating with honors in 1990 from Eau Claire’s Memorial High School. Beyond her professional endeavors, she actively volunteers for various causes such as Habitat for Humanity, Treehouse, Christian Recovery Center, Wooddale Church, and Feed My Starving Children. Additionally, she served on the Indiana University School of Journalism Alumni Board from 2002 to 2005.
