Jonathan Cain Biography
Jonathan Cain is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He is best known as the keyboardist and rhythm guitarist for the rock band, Journey. He also maintains a solo career as a contemporary Christian artist.
Jonathan Cain Career
Cain graduated from East Leyden High School in the Chicago suburb of Franklin Park, Illinois, and later attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music. After releasing two 45s as Johnny Lee on the Dial label from tapes made at Golden Voice in South Pekin, Illinois, he released a 45 on “October” on a small independent label as Jonathan Cain. Bearsville Records released Windy City Breakdown, the second album which Cain recorded with the Jonathan Cain Band 1976. After joining the Babys in 1979, he made appearances on the albums Union Jacks and On the Edge. Cain replaced keyboardist Gregg Rolie in the rock group Journey after leaving The Babys in 1980.
With his first collaborations on the album Escape, Cain helped propel Journey to the top of the charts by writing and playing the piano on songs like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which AllMusic dubbed “one of the best opening keyboard riffs in rock.” Possibly his most significant contribution was writing the Journey ballad “Faithfully” alone. The song is about life on the road while playing in a band. Later on, Cain could be found on a minimum of thirteen additional Journey albums and compilations. Jimmy Barnes’ rendition of the song “Working Class Man” Barnes’ signature song) is one of Cain’s compositions.
To form the band Bad English, Cain got back together with former Babys bandmates John Waite and Ricky Phillips, Journey bandmate Neal Schon, and future Journey drummer Deen Castronovo. The group disbanded in the early 1990s after putting out two albums. The Journey lineup from the album Escape came back together in 1996. Once again together, they recorded the album Trial by Fire. In 1998, Steve Perry departed the band once more following a hip injury he sustained while hiking in Hawaii that necessitated surgery. Three more lead singers have led Journey: Arnel Pineda from 2007 to the present, Jeff Scott Soto from 2006 to 2007, and Steve Augeri from 1998 to 2006.
Every Journey concert features a piano solo by Cain, usually just before the band’s performance of “Open Arms.” When he joined the band for the first time in 1980, he initiated this custom. Apart from his involvement with Journey, Cain has put out eight solo albums and co-written songs for other Journey members’ solo albums. In 2016, he began producing Christian music in addition to his solo endeavors. At City of Destiny, where his wife Paula White is the pastor, Cain leads worship.
With the publication of his memoir Don’t Stop Believin’: The Man, the Band, and the Song That Inspired Generations in May 2018, Cain achieved publication as a published author. Cain sang a cover of “Don’t Stop Believin'” at a party at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in November 2022. In a letter, Cain’s Journey bandmate Neal Schon’s lawyer accused him of undermining the “Journey brand” by playing at a political function and urged him to stop representing Journey at such events. For the songs “Open Arms” and “Who’s Crying Now,” which he co-wrote with Steve Perry, he has won two BMI Songwriter awards. Co-writing “When You Love a Woman” with Perry and Schon, it’s a Journey song that received a nomination for a 1997 Grammy Award.
