John Morales is an American meteorologist working for NBC6 where he specializes in hurricanes. He joined the NBC 6 news team in May 2009.
John Morales Career
In South Florida, John is the longest-tenured meteorologist and he has served as a reassuring television presence for almost 30 years. Over the years Morales has guided South Florida viewers through hurricanes such as; Katrina, Andrew, Wilma, Irene, and not long ago hurricane Irma. In addition, the John Coleman Broadcast Award was presented to John for his 2017 life-saving work, presented at the National Tropical Weather Conference.
Schenectady, New York is where Morales was born and brought up his father is of an Irish-American father while his mother is Puerto Rican. Later on, he returned to Upstate New York where he attended the atmospheric sciences program at prestigious Cornell University. While Morales was in college, he rowed for the Cornell Crew, won the student weather forecasting contest, and also worked at the student-run radio station WVBR, as a disc jockey and sportscaster
Furthermore, after having graduated, John became a civil servant with the U.S. National Weather Service in 1984. While he was there, he became a lead Forecaster in Puerto Rico and he later accepted a position at the National Center for Environmental Predictions in Washington D.C as Chief of the South American Desk. In addition, John secured his first job at Univision Network where he worked at its Miami station WLTV channel 23. While he was there, he served as the chief meteorologist from 1991 to 2002. Later on, Morales joined WSCV Telemundo 51 where he worked from 2003 through 2008, while serving as the chief meteorologist.
In addition, while John worked for WSCV Telemundo 51, he became the first Latino to substitute on NBC’s Weekend Today show as a meteorologist. He has also previously worked for NBC’s Miami station WTVJ / NBC6 as the chief meteorologist a position he took up in 2009. Furthermore, he is among the few presenters elected to be a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). In 2007, John earned the Outstanding Contribution AMS Award from the Advance of Applied Meteorology. For his Radio and Television weather casting, he has won the Broadcaster of the Year Award and he holds the AMS and National Weather Association Seal of Approval.
Morales is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and he is accredited by the AMS as a Certified Consulting Meteorologist. At every station John worked in, he received an Emmy award thus he has a total of 3 Emmys. Not long ago, Morales received the Silver Circle Award, which he received for his quality contributions to television. In addition, he took part in Vice President Al Gore’s White House conference on global warming and climate change in 1997. At the invitation of President Barack Obama in 2014, Jon returned to the White House where he was present during the release of the Third National Climate Assessment.
In 2012 and 2017, John co-authored studies pertinent to America’s Weather Enterprise, and he was appointed twice to the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) committees. In 2000, Morales wrote Huracanes, which is a Spanish-language reference book on hurricanes. Furthermore, he is an active volunteer in the community and he has taken part in many South Florida non-profits where he mentored young scientists.
