Jerry Hayes is an American Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter working for WHNT as a weekday evening anchor at 4, 5, and  6:30 pm. He has worked at WHNT since March of 1979 when he joined the station. 

Jerry Hayes Career 

Nashville, Tennessee is Hayes’ native home and he attended Middle Tennessee State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication in 1977. Jerry interned at WTVF, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, and after graduating, he secured a job as the chief videotape editor in the station’s News Department. He then relocated to Huntsville in the fall of 1978, and secured a job at WHNT as a reporter, however, within a number of weeks, he started anchoring and producing the weekend newscasts. From being a 10 o’clock co-anchor and then noon anchor, he shifted to working as the main anchor of the 6 pm and 10 pm newscast in November of 1983.

Following April 27, 2011, tornadoes, Jerry started anchoring the 6:30 pm newscast on WHNT. In addition, after having anchored the late-night newscast for over 30 years, Jerry shifted to his current position in 2016, which is co-anchoring the 4 and 6:30 weeknight newscasts alongside Christine Killimayer. Hayes has traveled all over the world to gather stories for NEWS 19 and he reported from the White House and shared stories from St. Petersburg, Russia. Furthermore, Jerry has had the opportunity to interview celebrities such as Carol Burnett and Mark Hamill. However, one of his most memorable moments was interviewing and getting to know the boys in the band from Fort Payne.

He was the first television reporter to have an interview with the members of the Alabama group. Hayes enjoys country music and in the years 2018 and 2010, he was invited as a guest announcer during a live portion of the Grand Ole Opry. Furthermore, over the years, he has received many honors and awards including; being nominated nine times for an Emmy and he won two Emmy awards. He received recognition from the Associated Press Television Award as the Best News Anchor in Alabama in 2005, 2006, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In addition, he was presented with the Abby award for News Anchor of the Year in 2008, 2011, and 2013 by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. For a feature story that he did, “A Father’s Love” he was awarded an Abby award in 2012. Later in 2013, Hayes was honored with a Region 12 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Sports Reporting. Furthermore, during his downtime, he enjoys playing golf, fishing, watching his Tennessee Titans and Nashville Predators, and spending ample time with his family.
