Jeff Lawson Biography
Jeff Lawson is an American retired meteorologist who worked for 13News where he served as the chief meteorologist for 33 years. He joined the 13News in 1990 and left the station in November 2023 for his retirement.
Lawson arrived at WVEC, in Norfolk, Virginia in 1990 after working as a weekend meteorologist and weekday reporter at WWBT in Richmond and Fox 5 in D.C. and at WWBT/NBC12 Raycom Media, in Richmond, Virginia. Before that, he worked in private companies like WeatherCenter Inc., in Ithaca, New York Area, and AccuWeather, in State College, Pennsylvania Area. In those private companies, he did forecasts for a variety of clients, like ski resorts, radio stations, school systems, Newport News Shipbuilding, and even other TV weather forecasters who were not meteorologists. Lawson has been certified by the American Meteorological Society and he owns a weather research firm known as Lawson Weather Research where he has been working since March 1985.

After serving as 13News Now’s chief meteorologist for 33 years, Jeff Lawson delivered his final forecast to Hampton Roads on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, during WVEC’s 6 p.m. newscast. He handed off the title of chief meteorologist to Tim Pandajis, who returned to Norfolk and WVEC on November 6, 2023, and replaced him. The 13News Now team also gathered with friends, family, past and present co-workers, and mentors to honor his legacy and celebrate his retirement.

October 5, 2022, it was announced that Lawson would undergo surgery that might force him to retire from the job he loves. For the second time, Lawson was going to have a part of his tongue removed. 13News reports that Mayo Clinic, diagnosed Lawson with leukoplakia or erythroplakia, thick, white patches on the gums, cheeks, or tongue and are abnormal red lesions on the mucous membranes in the mouth.
A surgeon cut out the affected part of Jeff’s tongue, which was about 20% of its surface and had a 20% chance of turning into cancer. The surgery was scheduled for October 10, 2023, and is friends, family, co-workers, and well-wishers prayed for and wished him all the best. However, this wasn’t Lawson’s first time, five years ago he had to have about 10% of the surface area of his tongue removed for the same reason. He was able to return to the station after having speech therapy which got him back in shape to hit the airwaves sooner than doctors expected. But this time, Jeff doesn’t know how much his speech would be affected and how much delivering a forecast would be hampered.
