Jared Capp Biography

Jared Capp is an American Builder, contractor, CEO of Pangea Design Group, and reality television personality. He is best known for being a cast member of the reality television show; Building Outside the Lines which will debut on December 26, 2023.

Jared Capp Career

Capp is a worker who fights to save all kinds of resources, including money and the environment. He made a name for himself in Spearfish by building the first straw bale or cob home with a gray water system and composting toilet that was approved by the state. Delete any images of a sod house made from prairie soil and hot piles of “stuff” in the backyard before going on. His house is both beautiful and good for the earth.

Before he built his house, Cappie had the crazy idea to change the zoning on his three acres from single-family to agricultural. This would help him with his plan to grow veggies and sell them in the area. Capp studied and graduated from Spearfish High School in 1995 and immediately after that, he went to San Antonio to join AirForce basic training.

He traveled to over 54 countries and 49 states before leaving the military. Thereafter, he went to work at his brother’s restaurant in Wasta, South Dakota, and got into event marketing which he enjoyed. After that, he served for the Second Nature Company as a wilderness instructor for scared kids. After working there, he needed a break from work so he went on road trips for eight months with his veggie-powered Volkswagen starting in South Utah up to the Arctic Circle in Alaska.

In 2004, he made his first off-grid home and modified a 1993 international school bus with PV solar, solar hot water, and a composting toilet. In 2008, his parents asked him to go back to Dallas where his grandfather used to live in a Swisher’s three-acre place. His grandfather passed away in 2001 and the property has been empty since then. He then used opportunities to build on his grandfather’s property using ideas he saw while he was traveling abroad.

He used local materials to build naturally. The roof of his building sits on the bales, which means it can hold weight. A pole barn frame wrapped in bales would not be able to hold weight. Straw bales are like big, soft bricks that are attached to the base with a system of cables that he made. Six inches of sand and clay mix are spread over the straw on both the inside and outside to make the cob layer.

The cob is what makes thermal mass, which keeps heat in and cools things down. It was warm inside because of a woodstove fire that went on during the night at 8 p.m. The straw walls and 10-inch thick floor were warmed by the sun because he didn’t light the stove. This is called passive solar design. It is made of clay, sand, straw, and water that has been towed, oiled, and waxed into a hard surface.

The floor is very smooth and comfy. After putting down a dirt floor, he saved the mix and made something called cookies with it. After they dry out, he puts them in a Ziploc bag. He says if you break a piece of the floor by dropping a cooking pan or a child’s skateboard, all you have to do is break off a piece of the cookie and mix it with water. The floor will be back to mud, and you can patch it.
