Jane Caffrey is an American reporter working for WVIT as a reporter at 7 p.m on weekday news. She joined the WVIT news team in August 2021, after previously working for WDBJ7.
Jane Caffrey Career
Caffrey graduated from Carlton College with a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies & Spanish in 2008. While there, she was the Editor-in-Chief of ‘The Carletonian,’ an independent student newspaper, anchor and producer for KRLX Radio, a live university newscast. Additionally, she was a recipient of the Larson International Fellowship to conduct research on the media in Brazil, and a senior thesis analyzing the role of the Brazilian media in an evolving democracy. Later on, she joined New York University to pursue her Masters of Arts News and Documentary in 2010.
Here she individually shot, produced, and edited ‘Olympic Legacy,’ a 30-minute documentary about evictions and displacement in Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, recipient of a NATAS grant to film ‘Olympic Legacy’ in Brazil and recipient of a merit-based scholarship. In 2008, she began her professional career at NBC St. Paul, Minnesota as a production assistant Joined NBC reporters, anchors, producers, photographers, and editors for two-week coverage of the 2008 Republican National Convention. She was then an Audio Production Assistant at ESPN Minneapolis, Minnesota and assisted sports correspondent Rachel Nichols with pre/post-game production – running audio for live shots from the field.
Prior to joining NBC Connecticut, Jane was an evening anchor at WDBJ7 in Roanoke, VA, where she was the main anchor at 5:30, 6:30 and 11 p.m. weeknights and a reporter and weekend anchor at KRIS 6 News in Corpus Christi, TX. In addition, she was also an entertainment news producer for CNN in Los Angeles and New York for four years where she conducted interviews with A-list stars and directors at red carpet premieres and during movie junkets.
Major national stories she has covered include the protests in Richmond, VA in the wake of George Floyd’s death, Hurricane Harvey’s landfall in South Texas, and the Sutherland Springs, TX church shooting. She also traveled to Puerto Rico with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to cover the delivery of supplies after Hurricane Maria. She is passionate about sharing news that impacts Latino communities as well as covering the issues that impact veterans, having lived in different areas with military bases and strong veterans networks.
Moreover, she has covered multiple entertainment awards shows and red-carpet events, including the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In her downtime, she enjoys outdoor activities, trying out new restaurants, visiting museums, and spending time with her dog.
