After attending Communications and Media Arts High School, he moved on to Michigan State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Jamal worked for KVLY in Fargo, North Dakota for three years before joining 13 On Your Side in November 2014. Jamal knew he would be covering the West Michigan Whitecaps and the Grand Rapids Griffins when he took the position at 13 On Your Side. He was also aware that a G-League basketball franchise was in the works. He was aware that the same Detroit sports teams that he had grown up rooting for were popular in this market.
Jamal carried on his tradition of greatness while he was in West Michigan, anchoring 13 On Your Sidelines’ high school football highlights. Most recently, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters named the program the state’s finest sportscast for 2021. He traveled far and wide while working at 13 On Your Side in order to cover important events for regional teams. This includes the 2015 Midwest League Championship won by the West Michigan Whitecaps, the 2017 Cotton Bowl trip by Western Michigan University, and the 2023 White House celebration of Ferris State University’s Division 2 National Football Championship. That’s all before you even consider the number of trips he made to cover the Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Detroit Lions, and Detroit Tigers.
Following Sam Hooks, who worked at 13 On Your Side from 1976 until 1987, Jamal was the first Black sports director. Jamal has led the 13 On Your Side newsroom in the background. He is an advocate for inclusion, equity, and diversity. When you need someone to check over and analyze your work, he’s a mentor. When things go tough, he can always be counted on. In fact, people appear to gather around Jamal when he shows up for work every day, as though they have been waiting all day to see him.
At Bally Sports Detroit, Jamal assisted the production crew in the broadcast truck during live games, edited videos for Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings games, sideline reported CCHA hockey games and MHSAA State Championship basketball games and operated floor camera, teleprompter, and edited highlights for studio shows. He has also worked in other stations including as a sports producer at WLAJ-TV and weekend sports anchor, and multimedia journalist at Valley News Live, where he sidelined reporting for statewide college football broadcasts.
