Irv Gikofsky is an American meteorologist working for PIX 11 as an evening meteorologist at 5, 6 and 10pm. He joined PIX 11 in September 1993, as a weekday weatherman.
Irv Gikofsky Career
Brooklyn is Gikofsky’s birth home and he was brought up in Queens. He attended P.S. 201 and J.H.S. 218 and graduated proudly from Francis Lewis High School. Later on, he joined Hofstra University in Long Island where he graduated in 1967, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. In addition, Irv also studied at Hofstra where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Education, and he pursued doctoral studies at Yeshiva University.
Gikofsky has delivered forecasts on New York television for nearly 40 years and for this reason, he has been give the name Mr. G. He started his career while at Albert Einstein Intermediate School in the Bronx where he served as a teacher. During that time, he created New York City school system’s first computerized weather program for children and teacher to use. After ten years of serving as a public school teacher, he was given a job opportunity at WCBS-TV in Nds Work, to serve as a weathermanin 1977.
After working at WCBS-TV for 17 years, he joined the WPIX 11 team in September 1993, as a weekday weatherman. While working at WPIX, Irv has an Edward R. Murrow Award and five Emmy awards. Gikofsky was presented with the Friar’s Club Life Time Achievement Award in 2018, by Mike Wallace. Furthermore, the PIX News at 10 has been named by many prestigious outlets as the Best Newscast including the; New York Press Club and New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association.
In addition, he is a huge supporter of education and he is actively involved with working with student. Gikofsky has visited more that 500 schools where he spole in classrooms and he make at least one school visit every week. Since the debut of New York City’s “Principal for a Day” program, Irv has taken part in declaring a homework and test-free day for all students in the Bronx. Furthermore, he is a board member for the R Baby Foundation that assists to improve pediatric care in emergency rooms in the tri-state area.
Irv is a Professional in Residence at his alma mate Hofstra University where he speaks in both television and radio. During Irv’s spare time, he enjoys running in the Cenral Park, and over the years, he has run in 34 New York City Marathons. he also run for more than 75,000 miles and he is a member of a unique group of runners to accomplish that feat.
