Irene Cruz Biography
Irene Cruz is an American two-time Emmy-nominated anchor and reporter working for ABC 7 as a weekend morning anchor and general assignment reporter. She co-anchors the weekday morning newscast alongside Marc Cota-Robles and Tony Cabrera. In addition, Cruz joined the ABC 7 team in June 2022, after previously working for WOAI-TV.
Irvine is Irene’s native home and she attended Arnold O. Beckman High School where she graduated in 2010. Later on, she joined UC Irvine where she graduated in 2013, with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism. In addition, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) awarded Irene a scholarship award.
Before Cruz joined the ABC 7 team, she worked for WOAI-TV in San Antonio, Texas where she served as the weeknight anchor and reporter for the 10 pm newscast. Irene has received nominations for two Emmy awards inclusive of a report regarding the risks of deepfake technology. Prior to Texas, she worked for KXTV-TV in Sacramento, California where she served as an anchor and reporter. In addition, while she was at the station, she covered everything from the potential Oroville Dam failure to protests at the state Capitol to the Northern California wildfires.
Furthermore, Irene began her career in Yuma, Arizona at KYMA-TV where she served as the weeknight anchor and reporter for the 5 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm newscasts. She also produced shows and reported as a multi-media journalist who shot and edited her own stories. While she worked at KYMA-TV, she covered topics such as immigration, border security, and agriculture. During her free time, she can be found singing, reading comic books, writing science fiction, playing the piano, and 3D printing.
