Sowards received her degree in radio and television broadcasting in 2016 from Stephen F. Austin State University. She was recognized by being named to the President’s and Dean’s lists. Hunter completed her studies at SFA with an internship at KTRE-TV, where she was employed as a multi-skilled journalist soon after graduation. Before she was welcomed as a Californian in 2019, she regarded it as an honor to anchor in her hometown.

Prior to joining CBS 13, Hunter served as an anchor and reporter at KUSI-News in San Diego, California, and was the primary anchor for KTRE-TV, the station she grew up watching in her hometown of Nacogdoches, Texas.
