Howard Kurtz Books

He outlines issues facing American newspapers in his first book, “Media Circus: The Trouble with America’s Newspapers,” (1993) and makes recommendations. Fearful leadership, a developing tabloid style of reporting that emphasizes celebrities and personal scandals, inadequate coverage of racial issues and the Persian Gulf War, expanding bureaucracy, and pasteurization of the news are a few of the problems noted. In 1997, he published his second book, “Hot Air: All Talk, All the Time”, which highlights the shortcomings of the talk-show and political talk-show genre, despite its fast expansion on radio and television. Kurtz lists a number of issues, such as sensationalism, deception, hysteria, superficiality, lack of preparation, and conflicts of interest.

“Spin Cycle: Inside the Clinton Propaganda Machine” (1998) details the strategies employed by the Clinton White House to deflect attention from non-issues that the media is covering and to spin the scandals and controversies surrounding the Clintons. The book “The Fortune Tellers: Inside Wall Street’s Game of Money, Media, and Manipulation” (2000) explores how cable television programs and websites that give commentators, stock promoters, and brokerage company stock analysts a platform are fueling the public’s rising infatuation with stock market trading. The possibility of stock market insiders manipulating the public and media is reviewed.

The 2007 book Reality Show: Inside the Last Great Television News War details the battles ABC, NBC, and CBS had to wage to improve the stature, legitimacy, and attraction of their evening network news program anchors. The main characters in the book are Brian Williams of NBC, Katie Couric of CBS, and Charles Gibson of ABC. The book Media Madness: Donald Trump, The Press, And The War Over The Truth, which was published in January 2018, covered the president’s conflicts with the news media throughout his first year in office.
