Gordon Ramsay Biography

Gordon Ramsay is a British celebrity chef, restaurateur, television presenter, and writer. He is best known for his restaurant group, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, and his signature restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, London. He rose to fame after appearing on the British television miniseries Boiling Point (1999).

Gordon Ramsay Career

Ramsay’s television presence was characterized by his ferocious temper, combative behavior, severe manner, and frequent use of vulgar language. Additionally, he made direct, critical, and contentious remarks, including taunts and sarcastic jokes about the contestants’ culinary prowess. Ramsay mixes work in the hospitality, food, film, and television industries. He has hired and promoted a number of chefs who have been his apprentices.

Ramsay is well-known for hosting television shows about competitive cooking and food, including the British series Hell’s Kitchen (2004), Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares (2004–2009, 2014), and The F Word (2005–2010). The American versions of Hell’s Kitchen (2005–present), Kitchen Nightmares (2007–present), MasterChef (2010–present), and MasterChef Junior (2013–present), along with Hotel Hell (2012–2016), Gordon Behind Bars (2012), Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back (2018–2020), and Next Level Chef (2022–present). Kitchen Nightmares won the 2005 British Academy Television Award for Best Feature.

Queen Elizabeth II named Ramsay an OBE in the 2006 New Year’s Honours list, for his services to the hospitality business. In July 2006, he became the third person to win three Catey Awards, having previously earned the title of best chef in the United Kingdom at the 2000 Catey Awards. His triumph came in the category of Independent Restaurateur of the Year. Forbes estimated that he will make US $70 million in 2020 and placed him 19th on their list of the wealthiest celebrities.

Ramsay’s passion for cooking started when he was a teenager. At the age of 19, he made the decision to focus more intently on his culinary studies rather than risk being remembered as “the football player with the gammy knee”. Under the Rotarians’ sponsorship, Ramsay enrolled in North Oxfordshire Technical College to study hotel management. “A complete accident” was how he put his decision to attend culinary college. The Wroxton House Hotel employed Ramsay as a commis chef in the middle of the 1980s. He managed the Wickham Arms’ 60-seat dining room and kitchen until he resigned after having an affair with the proprietor’s wife. After that, Ramsay relocated to London and worked in a number of eateries until being motivated to work at Harveys for Marco Pierre White.

After two years and ten months of employment at Harveys, Ramsay chose to pursue his dream of studying French cooking because he was fed up with “the rages and the bullying and violence”. White urged Ramsay to work for Albert Roux at Le Gavroche in Mayfair, discouraging him from accepting a job in Paris. Choosing to follow his suggestion, Ramsay met Jean-Claude Breton there, who would go on to become his maître d’hôtel at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. Following a year of employment at Le Gavroche, Roux extended an invitation to Ramsay to serve as his second in charge at Hotel Diva, a ski resort in the French Alps.

After that, the 23-year-old Ramsay relocated to Paris to work with Michelin-starred chefs Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon. After three years of training in France, he gave in to the emotional and physical strain of the kitchen and took a year’s leave of absence to work as a personal chef on the Bermuda-based private yacht Idlewild. He visited Sicily and Sardinia, Italy, as part of his position on the boat, where he gained knowledge of Italian cooking.

When Ramsay returned to London in 1993, chef-patron Pierre Koffmann offered him a job as head chef at Chelsea’s three-Michelin-starred La Tante Claire. Not long after, Marco Pierre White reappeared in his life, promising to place him as head chef and give him a 10% stake in White’s business partners’ Rossmore. After 14 months, he renamed the eatery to Aubergine and received its first Michelin star. Aubergine received a second Michelin star in 1997. Ramsay left the company in July 1998 due to a disagreement with his business owners, who desired to expand Aubergine into a chain, and his desire to open his own restaurant.

In 1998, with the assistance of his father-in-law Chris Hutcheson and his former Aubergine colleagues, Ramsay founded his own restaurant in Chelsea called Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. In 2001, the restaurant received its third Michelin star, making Ramsay the first Scot to do so. The Good Food Guide ranked The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, as the UK’s top restaurant in 2011, with Restaurant Gordon Ramsay coming in second.

Ramsay’s empire grew quickly after he opened his first eatery. Moreover, he launched Pétrus, Amaryllis in Glasgow (which he eventually had to close), and Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s. He engaged Jean-Philippe Susilovic, a maître d’hôtel and friend of Ramsay’s who works at Pétrus and can be seen in Hell’s Kitchen, an American television series, as his employee. Subsequently, restaurants were opened at the Dubai Creek and Connaught hotels, the latter of which was named after his protégé Angela Hartnett. Verre in Dubai is the first restaurant that Ramsay has opened outside of the UK. 2005 marked the opening of two restaurants in Tokyo: Cerise by Gordon Ramsay and Gordon Ramsay at Conrad Tokyo. Gordon Ramsay at the London launched in New York City in November 2006. Despite mixed reviews, the prestigious Zagat book named him the city’s best newcomer in.

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, located on London’s Royal Hospital Road, received its third Michelin star and was named the Top Restaurant in the UK by the London Zagat Survey in 2001. Due to a delayed flight, he nearly missed the award ceremony when Queen Elizabeth II named him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2006 New Year’s Honours list for his services to the hotel industry. Ramsay became just the third person to win three Catey awards when he took up the “Independent Restaurateur of the Year” Catey award in July 2006. Additionally, Ramsay won two earlier Catey awards: Chef of the Year in 2000 and Newcomer of the Year in 1995. The two other triple winners are Jacquie Pern and Michel Roux.

Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine’s annual Caterersearch 100 list recognized him as the most powerful individual in the UK hospitality sector in September 2006. Jamie Oliver, who had topped the list in 2005, was surpassed by him. Furthermore, Ramsay was put forth as a candidate for rector of the University of St Andrews in 2006 as well, but Simon Pepper prevailed in the polls. Eight years running, Harden’s ranked Restaurant Gordon Ramsay the best restaurant in London; however, in 2008, it lost to Pétrus, a restaurant owned by former protégé Marcus Wareing. Ramsay was admitted to the Culinary Hall of Fame in January 2013.

In a mere minute and five seconds, Ramsay broke the previous Guinness World Record on June 14, 2017, for the “Fastest time to fillet a 10 lb fish.” With a length of 1.45 meters, Ramsay established a “Guinness World Record for the Longest Pasta Sheet Rolled in 60 Seconds” on August 16, 2017. The International Hospitality Institute named him one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Global Hospitality in June 2022. Ramsay and Nick DiGiovanni set the Guinness World Record for the biggest Beef Wellington on May 11, 2023. Innitially, it weighed 25.76 kg (56.79 lb). It was also two feet five inches tall, thirteen inches wide, and eight inches long.

Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited owned All of Ramsay’s commercial ventures, including restaurants, media, and consulting. The company was established on October 29, 1997, and managed in collaboration with his father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson. With a 69% share estimated at £67 million in 2007, Ramsay is the owner. In contrast to his prior endeavors, which functioned as a hybrid consultant and brand, Ramsay revealed plans to open three restaurants in the US in November 2006. These debuted in October 2006 at the Cielo in Boca Raton, Florida; in 2006–07, they opened at the London Hotel in Manhattan; and in West Hollywood, California, they launched at the London Hotel. Ramsay provides consulting services to a wide range of catering companies. Singapore Airlines chose him to be a consultant for their “International Culinary Panel” in 2005.

Gordon Ramsay Holdings bought three pubs in London at the end of 2006, and they turned into gastropubs. These are The Warrington in Maida Vale, which opened in February 2008; The Narrow in Limehouse, which opened in March 2007; and The Devonshire in Chiswick, which opened in October 2007. In 2011, Ramsay sold The Warrington and The Devonshire. In May 2008 Marcus Wareing, Gordon Ramsay Holdings’ 15-year protégé, was going solo after serving as the company’s Pétrus restaurant owner and operator since 2003. Industry insiders stated that Pétrus, a restaurant brand owned by Gordon Ramsay Holdings, would probably relocate to one of the group’s other locations, with the former La Noisette location being the most likely candidate.

Executive chef Jason Atherton of Maze restaurants globally quit in April 2010 to launch his own restaurant in Mayfair. Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited, the corporation, stated on October 19, 2010, that Chris Hutcheson had resigned as CEO. Soon after, having had Hutcheson followed by a private investigator, Ramsay wrote a letter to the press detailing how he had pieced together the “complex life” of the “manipulative” Hutcheson. Ramsay noted that his father-in-law’s “away days” “were rarely what I thought they were.” According to company records, Hutcheson borrowed up to £1.5 million from Gordon Ramsay Holdings; however, Hutcheson maintains that he informed the company of the borrowings and reimbursed the funds.

Hutcheson, referring to Ramsay as a cold-blooded egotist, claimed that he had been “vaporised” and exposed to a “public hanging”. Hutcheson entered a guilty plea in April 2017 to a charge of conspiring to break into Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited’s computers. Ramsay inaugurated The Fat Cow in October 2012 at The Grove, a tourist-friendly shopping center in Los Angeles. “The concept for The Fat Cow came from my desire to have a neighborhood restaurant that you could go to all the time to just relax and enjoy a terrific meal,” Ramsay said in a news release announcing his plans for the establishment. In 2014, the Fat Cow closed due to legal problems.

Gordon Ramsay Steak opened in Las Vegas in the same year. Since then, the steakhouse idea has spread to other cities, including as Baltimore, Atlantic City, Lake Charles, California’s Horseshoe Casino, and Vancouver, which is expected to open in 2024. In September 2013, Ramsay and football player David Beckham established the Union Street Café in London, UK’s Southwark neighborhood. Chef Davide Degiovanni was in charge of the daily rotating menu of the Union Street Café’s Italian fare. In 2020–21, Street Pizza and Bread Street Kitchen & Bar, two more Gordon Ramsay eateries, took over the Union Street Café’s Southwark premises.

Based on the television program, Ramsay launched the first Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen restaurant in January 2018. Six other locations—one in Dubai and the others in the United States—have either opened or been announced since that site on the Las Vegas Strip. On April 17, 2018, Ramsay’s first street pizza location opened. It is located downstairs at his One New Change Bread Street Kitchen and serves “bottomless” pizza. The chef’s York and Albany restaurant hosted the second “Street Pizza” opening, and later on, sites in London, Dubai, and the USA were added.

On June 26, 2019, Chloe Sorvino of Forbes magazine revealed that Ramsay has reached an agreement worth $100 million with London-based private equity firm Lion Capital. Together, they established Gordon Ramsay North America (GRNA), a division of the Gordon Ramsay Restaurant company, with 50% ownership shared by Ramsay and Lion. The original plan was to open 100 restaurants in the United States by 2024. The COVID-19 epidemic put a stop to such plans. In a recent interview given in December 2021, GRNA CEO Norman Abdallah announced that the company’s revised plan called for the opening of 75 new company-owned outlets in the US between 2022 and 2026.

After some of Ramsay’s restaurants temporarily closed due to the coronavirus lockdown, Ramsay laid off more than 500 employees in the UK on March 24, 2020. Ramsay faced criticism for the layoffs; Forbes estimated his personal net worth to be US$63 million in 2019. The Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill, Ramsay’s first eatery in Macao, was set to debut in 2019 at the brand-new The Londoner Macao Hotel and Casino (formerly the Sands Cotai Central). The restaurant hasn’t launched as of 2022.

Ramsay debuted his own line of California wines in March 2021. Seabold Cellars made the wines in Monterey, California, in association with Master Sommelier Chris Miller and International Wine Expert Nick Dumergue. In September 2021, the Gordon Ramsay Academy—a culinary arts school—opened its doors in Woking, Surrey. Ramsay’s earliest on-screen appearances were in two fly-on-the-kitchen-wall documentaries, Boiling Point (1999) and Beyond Boiling Point (2000). However, in 1997, he and his restaurant partner participated as judges on a MasterChef-style program for young catering students. In 2001, Ramsay made an appearance on the third season of Faking It, where he assisted Ed Devlin, a burger flipper who aspired to become a chef, in learning the craft. The 2001 BAFTA for “Best Factual TV Moment” went to this episode.

Ramsay had appearances in two British television shows in 2004. Over the course of a week, the chef was shown resolving failing eateries on Channel 4’s Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. The fifth season of this show aired in 2007. In the reality show Hell’s Kitchen, which broadcast on ITV1, Gordon Ramsay trained ten British celebrities to be cooks while they managed an East End restaurant on Brick Lane that was open to the public for the two-week show. Despite being the show’s originator, Ramsay only appeared in the first season of Hell’s Kitchen because he had a four-year deal with Channel 4, which meant he would not be able to return to the ITV-produced series.

Produced by Granada Entertainment and A. Smith & Co., the US version of Hell’s Kitchen debuted Ramsay for American viewers on the Fox network in May 2005. The concept of the show is identical to that of the original British series, highlighting Ramsay’s notoriously short fuse and perfectionism. A US version of Kitchen Nightmares, hosted by Ramsay, debuted on Fox on September 19, 2007. Ramsay declared he was discontinuing the series on June 23, 2014. Fox debuted Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back in June 2018. The show has a concept similar to Kitchen Nightmares but a condensed timeline.

The F Word is a food-focused magazine show that Ramsay has hosted five series of. It debuted on Channel 4 on October 27, 2005. The program is structured around a number of major recurrent elements, including a brigade competition, a guest cook competition, an investigative report about food, and a series-long endeavor to raise animals that will be served in the finale. A celebrity usually serves as the guest chef, who creates a meal of their own and pits it against one that Ramsay has submitted that is comparable. Unaware of who prepared what, the diners rate the meals, and if a guest wins (as they have many times), their dish is served in Ramsay’s restaurant. Fox debuted the US version on May 31, 2017.

In July 2006 re-signed Ramsay with an exclusive four-year contract that ran through July 2011. One of the highest-rated shows that Channel 4 aired each week was the series. In a particular episode of The F Word, Ramsay prepared meals for the prisoners at Doncaster Prison in Marshgate. When Kieron Tarff, a prisoner, was released in 2007, the chef was so amazed with how quickly he sliced vegetables that he gave him a position at his restaurant. Ramsay produced and judged the US version of MasterChef in 2010. (Another season of the program, starring Ramsay, debuted in June 2011.) Graham Elliot and Joe Bastianich one of the culinary judges, joined him on that same show.

Moreover, he starred in Gordon’s Great Escape, a travelogue about his trip to India, and an Asian-set television series. The first UK series produced by Ramsay’s own production firm, One Potato Two Potato, was Ramsay’s Best Restaurant, which he hosted. In order to raise awareness of the hundreds of millions of sea fish that are discarded, Ramsay and colleague chef Jamie Oliver, along with a few other celebrity chefs, spent time on a trawler boat in the 2010 television series The Big Fish Fight. Fox said in March 2012 that Ramsay’s fourth show, Hotel Hell, would premiere on the Fox network. While the show is similar to Kitchen Nightmares, it centers on failing hotels, motels, and other lodging facilities in the United States.

First scheduled to premiere on April 6, 2012, and June 4, 2012, the series launched on August 13, 2012. He inked a contract with Fox in August 2021. In September 2005, Ramsay appeared on CNN International’s Quest. There, Richard Quest assumed the role of celebrity chef, with Jamie Oliver, Heston Blumenthal, Wolfgang Puck, and Sanjeev Kapoor. Additionally, Ramsay participated in an ITV television series in 2006 and 2008. The series followed the build-up to Soccer Aid, a celebrity charity football match. Ramsay missed the first half of the match due to an injury he sustained while training. Robbie Williams captained the England XI, while Ramsay led the Rest of the World XI. His calf was cut four inches deep, so he wasn’t as involved.

He revealed that he currently drives a Range Rover Sport Supercharged and a Ferrari F430. Furthermore, he said that he had replaced his prior Bentley Continental GT during his second appearance on the BBC’s Top Gear. In addition, Ramsay made an appearance on Top Gear on May 14, 2006, during the “Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car” segment. With a lap time of 1.46.38, Ramsay was the top celebrity on Top Gear’s leaderboard until Simon Cowell passed him. In an English National Blood Service “Give Blood” television campaign, Ramsay played the lead role and stated he would have perished from a ruptured spleen if it weren’t for the blood donation of another person.

He served as a guest host for the first installment of the 32nd season of the BBC comedy panel show Have I Got News for You on October 13, 2006. Ramsay made an appearance in the Extras Christmas special on December 27, 2007. In addition, Ramsay made a special appearance on Channel 4’s Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack in January 2008. There, the housemates participated in his Cookalong Live television program. Gordon checked on the participants’ progress on a frequent basis by speaking with them directly through the house plasma displays on Big Brother. A 2011 American Idol results show featured video of the top 5 competitors competing in a Gordon Ramsay cookery challenge. Ten minutes were given to the Top 5 to create the best omelettes.

Ramsay appeared in the November 2011 episode of The Simpsons called “The Food Wife”. Ramsay appeared as a guest in the New Girl episode “Operation: Bobcat” in February 2017. On the December 11, 2017 episode of JTBC’s South Korean reality series Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, Ramsay made an appearance. Furthermore, he faced backlash in November after he was seen serving as a spokesperson for the mass-produced Korean beer Cass. He defended as being modest and reasonably priced. Big Hero 6: The Series has Ramsay as Bolton Gramercy’s voice. He serves as the inspiration for the character, a fiery-tempered cook.

Gordon Ramsay Family

Ramsay was born in Johnstone, Scotland to Helen Cosgrove and Gordon James Sr. His mother is a nurse, while his father worked as a swimming pool manager, welder, and shopkeeper. He has an older sister, Diane, a younger brother, Ronnie and a younger sister, Yvonne. He went to England with his family when he was nine years old. His parents raised him in the Stratford-upon-Avon neighborhood of Bishopton. According to him, his early years were “hopelessly itinerant. His family moved around a lot because of his father’s ambitions and shortcomings.

His father was a violent, often violent, drinker; Ramsay called him a “hard-drinking womaniser.” He disclosed in his memoirs that his father mistreated and ignored the kids. His sister worked as a waitress at a nearby Indian restaurant, where he was employed as a pot washer. Initially, the team selected him to play under-14 football at the age of 12. This fulfiled his dream of becoming a football player. However, his early football career was marred by injuries. For this, he was forced to give it up following a catastrophic knee injury. He moved out of the family house and into a flat in Banbury when he was sixteen.

Chris Hutcheson, Ramsay’s father-in-law, oversaw the restaurant mogul’s business affairs up until 2010. Hutcheson was sentenced to six months in prison on June 7, 2017, for planning to breach a computer system connected to the Ramsays’ commercial ventures. Hutcheson and his sons faced accusations of nearly 2,000 system access attempts between October 23, 2010, and March 31, 2011.

Gordon Ramsay Burger

The first Ramsay’s Street Burger opened its doors on December 3, 2020, in the St. Paul’s neighborhood of London. With a more laid-back vibe than the fine-dining gourmet burgers at the USA-based Gordon Ramsay Burgers franchise, other Street Burger shops soon opened in the USA, London, Woking, and Reading. Gordon Ramsay Burger (formerly named BurGR until redesigned in 2017) debuted in Las Vegas in December 2012.

In the 2020s, other sites of the upscale hamburger restaurant would open, including ones in Chicago, Boston, Seoul, and London’s Harrods Department Store. Due to problems the Michelin reviewers found, the Gordon Ramsay at The London restaurant in New York lost its two Michelin stars in October 2013. Michael Ellis, the director of the guide, reported having “issues with consistency” in addition to receiving “some very erratic meals.” The demise came after Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s, another of Ramsay’s eateries, closed its doors in June 2013.

Gordon Ramsay Fish and Chips

In 2016, the first Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips location opened in Las Vegas on the Linq Promenade. Delicious British fish and chips with a style and quality reminiscent of Gordon Ramsay. It’s straightforward, classic, and entertaining. The following is the recipe for Gordon Ramsay’s fish and chips:

  1. 120 Grams Self Rising Flour + additional to coat
  2. 175 Grams White Fleshed Fish (such as Cod)
  3. 1 Medium Egg White

  5. 1 Large Waxy Potato, Peeled
  6. Sunflower Oil
  7. Salt
  8. 1 Teaspoon Curry Powder (used twice)
  9. 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder

  1. 1 Tablespoon of Gherkins, chopped
  2. 50 Grams Creme Fraiche
  3. 200 Grams Mayonnaise
  4. 3/4 Shallot Diced
  5. Lemon Juice (about 1 Teaspoon)
  6. Hot Sauce (Optional)

Cooking instructions:

  1. Get the oil in a pan on medium-high heat for frying before assembling ingredients. Do not need a deep pan or pot, a large pan will do
  2. In a bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, curry powder, and beer. Then whisk egg whites till there are stiff peaks and fold into the batter (if too heavy add some water)
  3. Add a teaspoon of curry powder to dredging flour for more seasoning (optional)
  4. Season fish with salt, then coat with flour. Knock off excess flour and put it into the batter mixture. Make sure the fish is fully battered and add to the oil
  5. Once the fish is in, baste the fish with oil. Let it first side cook until golden brown and flip. Basting fish with oil on the other side. Take a pan on and off the oil so that the oil does not get too hot. Fish should be in oil for 3-3 1/2 minutes. Once finished put it on a plate with a paper towel and put it in a warm oven
  6. Chop potato into squares, then chop into tall skinny fries (the skinnier the fry the quicker they will cook). Then roll in a paper towel to dry any excess moisture. Add new oil to pain then add potatoes to high heat. Once the fries are browned, remove them from the oil to a paper towel and add salt.
  7. Add all Tartar ingredients together and mix. Add salt to taste and hot sauce if you want to heat.
  8. Assemble together and enjoy!
