Gocha Hawkins Biography

Gocha Hawkins is an American hairstylist, restaurateur, reality TV star, and influencer. She is best known for being on the AMC Networks show, Bold & Bougie. The show will be airing its first season on February 15, 2024.

Gocha Hawkins Career

Hawkins attended St. Cecilia’s Elementary and later St. Martin de Porres High School. She grew up in an abusive household on Detroit’s west side and faced challenges. Which included spending two years in prison in Montgomery, Alabama, for selling drugs. She participated in a work release program during her two-year incarceration and eventually qualified for parole in 1993. In her early 20s and determined to turn her life around, she enrolled at John M. Patterson State Technical College (now Trenholm State) in Montgomery with the initial plan to earn a nursing degree. After a shift in her career path to cosmetology, it became evident that she was a quick learner in this field. Recognizing her talent, she decided to pursue cosmetology and excelled in her craft. She eventually opened a salon across the street from the Alabama State University campus, becoming a highly popular hairstylist.

Her success in the cosmetology business marked a significant turnaround in her life after overcoming challenges and setbacks. In 1999, she relocated to Orlando, where she established a 14-chair salon. Her success in the hairstyling industry caught the attention of cheerleading teams across the league. This led to an opportunity to make the cheerleading team for the Detroit Pistons. This prompted her to sell her Orlando salon, and she subsequently traveled around the country. Here, she worked as an image expert for various NBA teams, starting in Detroit, then Miami, and finally settling in Atlanta in 2010. While continuing her work in hair salons, she gained a reputation as the go-to stylist for several prominent celebrities. Upon her arrival in Atlanta, she quickly secured a job that aligned with her aspirations. She expanded her clientele to include rapper Nicki Minaj, alongside existing celebrity clients such as Vivica A. Fox, Ja Rule, Beyonce and Pitbull.

After opening a five-chair salon in Atlanta, she drew the attention of the producers of the reality TV series “L.A. Hair,” becoming a featured cast member in one of the final seasons of the show, which ran for five years. In December 2018, Gocha’s Breakfast Bar opened in Atlanta’s Cascade area, featuring a menu with recipes Hawkins personally prepares. The menu includes items like “Krunch-tastic” French toast, “Better Than Yo Momma” buttermilk biscuits with honey glaze, shrimp and grits, and a veggie-based impossible burger with parmesan truffle fries. Concurrently, she closed Gocha Salon. Gocha’s Breakfast Bar not only offers delectable food but has become a popular destination for customers. Additionally, it attracted droves through its doors for its unique features beyond just the menu. She encountered a challenge with to-go orders dominating the dining room at Gocha’s Breakfast Bar.

Facing delays and negative reviews due to the overwhelming number of to-go tickets compared to in-house dining, she devised a solution. In January 2022, she introduced a 22-foot-long food truck, prominently displaying her face and logo, positioned adjacent to her restaurant. This food truck mirrors the kitchen’s offerings and effectively addresses the to-go order issues. By this point, she had expanded with another Breakfast Bar location in Fayetteville, 20 miles south of Atlanta. She also revealed plans for Gocha’s Tapas Bar, scheduled to open in the spring, and announced another Breakfast Bar opening in downtown Atlanta in the second quarter of the year. Hawkins, at 52 years old, attributes her relentless work ethic and success to her Detroit roots, highlighting the driven and hustling spirit instilled by her hometown. She credits her father, who at 72 still works at Ford, as a source of inspiration for her unwavering determination.

However, even with her numerous accomplishments, she acknowledges her limits. When asked if she still practices her exceptional skills in cutting and styling hair for her celebrity friends and clients, she bursts into laughter and firmly states that she no longer does. Managing the restaurant industry has proven to be an unexpected and demanding challenge, surpassing her initial expectations. She emphasizes that the restaurant business has been the hardest work she has ever undertaken in her entire life.
