Gil Simmons Biography
Gil Simmons is an American meteorologist who is currently working at WTNH where he serves as the chief meteorologist a position he took up on August 26, 2015. He joined the News 8 team in February 2003, and also serves as the weekday morning and mid-day noon meteorologist. In addition, he is a meteorologist for WTNH’s sister station, WCTX-TV, the MyNetworkTV-affiliated television station in that market.
For a period of six years, he forecasted weather while serving on active duty in the United States Marine Corps as a meteorologist/oceanographer from 1990 to 1996. Later on, he relocated to Connecticut where he worked as a weather forecaster. For his weather coverage in Connecticut, he was awarded with the Best Weathercast in Connecticut by the Associated Press in 2002 and received two Emmy nominations. Foster, Rhode Island, and Killingly, Connecticut are his native homes. He attended Western Connecticut State University where he graduated proudly and is a member of the American Meteorological Society.
In addition, Simmons is among the few meteorologists with the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society. During his downtime, he enjoys skiing, motorcycle riding, snowmobiling, and Crossfit and maintains his own weather website www.weather4connecticut.com. Simmons is very active in a number of community fundraisers and events and every Thanksgiving Day morning, he jumps into an icy lake to help raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. Furthermore, he has donated some of his time to groups fighting; The Smilow Cancer Center, The American Heart Association, Multiple Sclerosis, Connecticut Red Cross, The American Heart Association, Veteran groups, various 5K charities, and many others with great causes.
