Gary Bandy is an American anchor working for KSN16 as an anchor and co-host on Living Well Today alongside Shelby Neely. He joined the KSN16 news team in 1992, after previously working for radio Z103.
Gary Bandy Career
Bandy embarked on his broadcasting career while still in high school in his hometown of Parsons, Kansas. In 1981, he made the move to Joplin and continued his work in radio at Z103, co-hosting the successful Amos & Bandy morning show alongside Mike Amos, who was, in a little-known fact, Joplin Globe reporter Mike Pound. In 1992, Gary transitioned to television, taking on the role of co-host for KODE’s morning show alongside Joplin TV legend Vicki Kennedy. After over three years in that position, he moved on to co-host the morning show at KSN. Years of reporting on weather for both radio and television fostered a deep appreciation for meteorology in him. Inspired to further his knowledge, he returned to school and, three years later, became a Certified Meteorologist through Mississippi State University’s Meteorological Program.
In 2002, he assumed the role of Chief Meteorologist for KSN’s 5, 6, and 10 o’clock news. He held this position during numerous high-profile severe weather events in Southwest Missouri, Southeast Kansas, and Northeast Oklahoma, including the devastating 2011 Joplin tornado. He has also co-hosted various KSN lifestyle shows until his early retirement in 2014.
After a period of semi-obscurity, he made a comeback to KSN in August 2021, co-hosting their lifestyle program, Living Well. Interestingly, almost concurrently with Gary’s semi-return to work, his wife Doris semi-retired. Quite a coincidence, isn’t it?
