McKend works for CNN as a correspondent who covers national politics. In September 2021, she became a National Politics Reporter for CNN in Washington, D.C. McKend used to be an on-air Congressional Correspondent for Spectrum’s 24-hour news stations across the country. He did this from the nation’s center. People in Washington, D.C., know her for asking tough questions of people in power. For example, she got Mitch McConnell, who was Senate Majority Leader at the time, to say on the record that humans are making climate change worse and that he wasn’t going to be an “impartial juror” in President Trump’s first impeachment trial. When she asked McConnell about payments for slavery, he strongly rejected the idea in a way that had never been seen before. The story made headlines across the country for days.
After the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp farming legal, McKend wrote a series of stories about Black farmers. These stories won her the Society of Professional Journalists in Louisville’s first-place award for enterprise and investigative radio reporting. For the work, she was also up for an Ohio Valley Regional Emmy. McKend often appears on the WAMU/NPR show 1A, which is broadcast on more than 400 public radio stations in the United States. In addition, she is often asked to be on PBS’s Washington Week. From 2015 to 2018, she worked as a reporter at WCAX-TV, Vermont’s top CBS affiliate, where she was known for her strong interviews with politicians. In 2017, Vermont Business Magazine called her a Rising Star.
McKend used to work as a reporter for Spectrum News Hudson Valley from 2012 to 2014. As the Sullivan County reporter, she covered many stories that got national and international attention. These included the murder trial of Paul Novak and the wrongdoing of a village mayor. Moreover, she got surveillance video from his high-profile arrest through a Freedom of Information Act request, and the video went viral. The New York State Associated Press gave her an award for Best Continuing Coverage for her ongoing coverage of an illegal demolition in Monticello. Moreover, the AP gave her an award for General Excellence in Individual Reporting.
Before this job, she worked for a summer as a reporter in Washington, D.C., for KOLR/KOZL, a CBS station in Springfield, Mo. McKend graduated from Swarthmore College and then used the Turner Diversity Fellowship to get her master’s degree in broadcast and digital media from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Communications. Moreover, it makes her happy to be a part of the National Association of Black Journalists.
