Lavandera works for CNN as a Senior National Correspondent and is based in the Dallas office. Lavandera has been a CNN reporter since 2001 and has covered many important and historic stories for the network. The Edward R. Murrow Award was given to him for breaking news coverage of the Charlotte Riots. He was also on teams that won the Peabody Award for coverage of the BP Gulf Coast oil spill and Hurricane Katrina. His 2019 documentary, “The Hidden Workforce: Undocumented in America,” which showed how deeply illegal immigrants are woven into American society, often in places you wouldn’t expect, won him a Peabody Award as well.
Lavandera has reported about the proposed wall between the U.S. and Mexico, the protests in Charlotte, NC, after the death of Keith Lamont Scott, the ambush that killed five Dallas police officers, the unrest in Ferguson, MO, after the shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown, the capture and release of POW Bowe Bergdahl, the shooting at an Aurora movie theater, the damage caused by tornadoes in Oklahoma, the explosion at a fertilizer plant in Texas, and he has also worked hard to look into the deaths of boys at a reform school in Florida and the controversial pardons given by former Mississippi governor Haley Barbour.
Lavandera made an hour-long video called “Biker Brawl: Inside the Texas Shootout” in 2016 about the 2015 fight between two motorcycle clubs in Waco, Texas. CNN got surveillance video that had never been seen before and talked to important people in the illegal motorcycle clubs for the story. Lavandera is known for his unique and passionate storytelling and for making the people he meets while covering across the country come to life in his stories. Lavandera worked as a reporter for WFAA-TV in Dallas before she joined CNN. After the earthquake in El Salvador, Lavandera spent a week writing about the lives of the people who were hurt. He also wrote about Pope John Paul II’s trip to Cuba. Lavandera reported on many breaking news stories across the whole state of Texas, such as the standoff in the Republic of Texas in 1997, flooding in southern Texas, and storms in the Gulf Coast. Lavandera covered the race for governor between George W. Bush and Ann Richards in 1994. He also covered the Republican and Democratic conventions in 1992.
