Ed Helms Biography
Ed Helms is an American Emmy-award-winning actor and comedian best known for starring in The Hangover trilogy, Rutherford Falls (2021–2022), We’re the Millers (2013), Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021). He rose to fame after starring in the TV series The Office (2006–2013).
Ed Helms Career
Growing up, he went to the Interlochen Center for the Arts. He also graduated from The Westminster Schools in 1992, the same year as Brian Baumgartner, his co-star on The Office, did. Helms majored in geology when he first enrolled at Oberlin College, but he eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts in film theory and technology in 1996. He studied as an exchange student at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University for a semester. He had committed to an internship with WNBC’s press and publicity department, so during his college years, he declined a summer internship with Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
Helms started his career in comedy and acting as a writer and performer with sketch comedy bands in New York City after graduating from Oberlin. He was a trainee film editor at Crew Cuts, a post-production studio in New York City, where he recorded some preliminary voiceover tracks that later led to paid voiceover work while learning improvisation with the Upright Citizens Brigade ensemble. He located a talent agent quickly. In a 2005 interview, Helms remembered that he was doing comedic roles in New York City when “The Daily Show had a sort of open audition with a casting company that I had dealt with.” I understood the section after reading it.
During his career on the satirical news program, which spanned from April 2002 until mid-2006, Helms hosted several portions of the show, including “Digital Watch,” “Ad Nauseam,” and “Mark Your Calendar,” and also gave “field reports.” Additionally, he has contributed to the “This Week in God” program. TV Guide lists his “Battle of the Bulge” segment from 2005 which discussed people wearing Speedo bathing suits on Cape May, New Jersey beaches, and his “Mass. Hysteria” segment in which he criticized Massachusetts for being the first state to legalize gay marriage as his two signature pieces. After leaving the show in 2006, Helms made sporadic, fleeting appearances for the following two years. For the “Obama Quest” program, which followed Senator Barack Obama’s visit to Iraq, he returned on July 21, 2008.
On sister series The Colbert Report, he also narrated educational films for the “Prescott Group” on occasion. Late in July 2006, NBC revealed that Helms had joined the cast of the mockumentary The Office in a recurring role as Andy Bernard, a sentimental Cornell graduate with an obsession with cappella music, costarring with fellow Daily Show reporter Steve Carell. Helms began appearing regularly in the third season of the show. According to Paul Lieberstein, a writer for the show and actor who portrays Toby Flenderson, the HR representative at the Dunder Mifflin office in Scranton, “he had so much in common with this character we wanted to create,” “I can’t remember when they started merging.” On December 5, 2006, Helms made a reference to his time on The Office when he returned to The Daily Show, stating that he had been working “undercover at a paper company in Scranton”.
Helms was added to The Office’s opening credits in February 2010 after NBC announced in February 2007 that he had been upgraded to series regular. He soon established himself as a dependable member of the ensemble and a producer of the program. He mentioned that he was interested in a cappella music, just like his character Andy Bernard, in a June 2009 interview with National Public Radio. In addition, Helms has made appearances on several Comedy Central specials and television programs, including Children’s Hospital, Arrested Development, The Mindy Project, Wilfred, NTSF:SD: SUV, Tanner on Tanner, and Cheap Seats.
After conquering his fear of heights in the Colorado Mountains, he was the celebrity guest on the survival skills reality show Running Wild with Bear Grylls on August 3, 2015. He has provided the narration for commercials for brands like Burger King, Doritos, Hotels.com, Sharp Aquos, and the asthma treatment Advair. In the Weighty Decisions series on Cartoon Network, he provides the voice of Neil the Angel. In addition to the piano, guitar, and banjo, he also performs the sitar during some of his entertaining performances. Along with Michael Schur and Sierra Teller Ornelas, he co-created the sitcom Rutherford Falls for the Peacock. There are five indigenous writers in the series overall, including Ornelas.
