Desmond Purnell is an American Emmy award-winning sports anchor working for WUSA9. He serves as a sports anchor, reporter, and host at WUSA 9. Purnell joined the WUSA9 news team in 2011, after previously working for CW33.
Desmond, who played football at Mississippi State University, provides WUSA9 with excellent knowledge and the perspective of a former NCAA athlete. The Mississippi native was the first African-American television broadcaster in Rapid City, South Dakota, when he started his career there as a sports anchor/reporter. Before he joined WUSA, he spent over ten years as a reporter and nighttime sports host for Dallas’ CW33.
Purnell received a regional Emmy for “Best One-Time Sports Special” for his work on “Farewell to Texas Stadium” and was nominated for other Emmys throughout his time in Dallas. Before joining CW33, he was a reporter for Tyler’s KYTX-TV, when he covered the Dallas Mavericks’ NBA Finals loss to Miami.
