Derek James Biography
Derek James is an American anchor, reporter, and meteorologist working for WCCO-TV as a weekend evening anchor and reporter at 4 pm and a contributor to “The 4” during the week. He joined WCCO-TV in 2022.
Prior to joining WCCO-TV, James worked at WCCB-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina as a morning anchor and meteorologist for about 18 years. For over 10 years, he served as a morning co-anchor at the station.
Wisconsin is Derek’s native home and he attended Waupaca High School where he earned a diploma. He then joined Mississippi State University where he studied broadcast meteorology and atmospheric science. In addition, he gained an interest in news and broadcasting while in Wisconsin and he started his broadcasting career as an executive producer and host of “Video News Live,” when he was 15 years old.
Not long after, James secured a job at WDUX AM/FM where he served as a news anchor. He also gained national exposure while in sophomore for his coverage of the 18-day evacuation of residents in Weyauwega, Wisconsin in 1996, and a propane train tanker derailment/fire. In addition, he has also worked in Green Bay and Wausau as a morning radio host before relocating to Charlotte in 2000.
James attended Mississippi State University where he studied meteorology. The Radio and Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas (RTNDAC) awarded Derek a Best Weathercast Award. In addition, he also received a Best Sports Reporting Award for a story on how weather impacts NASCAR teams. On regular occasions, James was voted for by magazine readers as “Favorite Anchor” while he was in Charlotte. Furthermore, Derek loves volunteering in the community and he hosts charity events that support animals and children. In addition, he also loves coaching youth running and flag football.
