Dawn Sterling is an American anchor and reporter working for WICS as an evening anchor and reporter at 5, 6, and 10 p.m. alongside Stacey Skrysak. She joined the WICS news team in January 2024, after previously working for WAND-TV.
Dawn Sterling Career
After graduating from Utica High School, Sterling went to Central Michigan University, where she received her Bachelor of Applied Art in Broadcast Journalism, in 1999. She has spent almost 20 years providing Central Illinois viewers with pertinent local news and information. Her fourth stop as a broadcast journalist, with over 25 years of experience, was Central Illinois. With her extensive knowledge of the surrounding area, Sterling can identify the unique qualities of the Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign viewing locations. Additionally, Sterling worked alongside co-anchor Sean Streaty at WAND for almost 20 years before joining WICS. The Champaign-Springfield-Decatur media market is covered by WAND, WICIS, and WCIA-TV, which is situated in Champaign.
In addition, Sterling reported for stations in Binghamton, New York, Terre Haute, Indiana, and Flint, Michigan, before landing in Decatur in 2004. Dawn has served on the boards of BABYTalk, Catholic Charities, and Decatur Women of Excellence. She collaborates closely with the Decatur Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation and was instrumental in the creation of Fido Fields, the first dog park in the Decatur Park District. Dawn Sterling Leaving WAND | Dawn Sterling Joining WICS
After almost 20 years with Decatur-based WAND-TV, Sterling announced her departure in late November. She then addressed her future on social media. Sterling asserted that happiness is significant and that she realized a change was necessary after meeting Richardson and news director Heather Nodine. Sterling received an offer for a new contract in the fall, according to Clay Koenig, president and general manager of WAND. Both he and Jacklyn Sylvester, the station’s news director, had anticipated Sterling’s signing, but she had not. The station is currently looking for Sterling’s replacement, according to Koenig. The decision did not engender any ill will.
After Jon Hansen departed WICS in early December to take a position as the director of communications and engagement for the Rochester school system, the anchor position became available. On January 15, 2024, Sterling began working with friend and former WAND coworker Stacey Skrysak as a co-anchor at WICS/WICD-TV. The newscasts air at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. Additionally, Sterling appears on the 5:30 and 9 p.m. newscasts on WRSP-TV.
