England is Carlin’s birth home and he was later brought up in Ithaca, New York. His family also spent a couple of years in Ghana, West Africa during his childhood days. While they resided in Ghana, West Africa, his father founded a school for the blind and deaf. Dave attended the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.
Before Dave joined WCBS, he worked at KSWB-TV in San Diego where he served as an anchor and reporter for six years. Before that, he worked at CBS affiliates including KGMB-TV in Honolulu, Hawaii where he served as an anchor/reporter for 10 years. In addition, Carlin has also worked at WHP-TV in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he served as a weekday anchor. Furthermore, Dave began his journalism career as a general assignment reporter at KTBC-TV in Austin, Texas.
While working for WCBS, Dave’s most memorable live reports were in Times Square: during the celebration after the New York Giants’ victory over the New England Patriots at Super Bowl XLII, and The New Year’s Eve Countdown. For the last 20 years, Carlin has covered major national news stories and events such as; Hurricanes Iniki on Kauai, Hawaii, and Hugo in South Carolina. In addition, he has also covered the Southern California wildfires, the Space Shuttle Program, the trial and execution of serial killer Ted Bundy in Florida, and the San Francisco Earthquake. Furthermore, his work earned him awards from The Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences also awarded him an Emmy Award.
