Dan O’Dowd Career

O’Dowd attended Montville Township High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Rollins College. Prior to joining MLB, O’Dowd worked as the general manager of the Colorado Rockies from September 20, 1999, to October 8, 2014. O’Dowd’s tenure at GM has yielded inconsistent outcomes. After taking control of the team, he traded Dante Bichette, Vinny Castilla, and Darryl Kile, deciding to assemble a pitching, speed, and defense-oriented squad.

O’Dowd signed pitchers Denny Neagle and Mike Hampton to long-term contracts the following season following an unexpected 82–80 run. Subsequently, O’Dowd tried to cut costs and assemble a core group of young players around franchise star Todd Helton. The team produced players like Troy Tulowitzki, Ubaldo Jiménez, Jeff Francis, and Matt Holliday while he was in charge.

O’Dowd received a contract extension following the 2007 Rockies season’s thrilling playoff run after winning 21 of their final 22 games to force a tiebreaker against the San Diego Padres, which was their most unexpected run ever. Before falling to the Boston Red Sox in the 2007 World Series, the Rockies, who made their first postseason appearance in twelve years, swept the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Philadelphia Phillies.

That same year, O’Dowd remained general manager and the Rockies restructured their front office in 2012 as a result of their struggles, appointing Bill Geivett as director of major league operations. O’Dowd worked for the Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles for 15 years prior to joining the Rockies, progressing from assistant general manager to director of baseball operations.
