Dan Abrams Career

Abrams graduated from Riverdale Country School in 1984. In 1988, he earned his Bachelor of Arts with honors in political science from Duke University. During his time at Duke, he hosted newscasts on Cable 13, a student-run channel, and served as vice president of the student body. He later obtained his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Columbia Law School. He initiated his professional journey at Court TV, where he reported on significant events such as the O. J. Simpson case, the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Netherlands, and the trials related to assisted suicide involving Dr. Jack Kevorkian in Michigan. Upon departing from Court TV, he served as a general assignment correspondent for NBC News.

This was between 1997 and 1999 before being appointed Chief Legal Correspondent. Following this, he commenced hosting his own show on MSNBC, titled “The Abrams Report,” starting in 2001. He continued to host the show until he assumed the role of General Manager at MSNBC in June 2006. He held this position until October 2007. Subsequently, he shifted his focus to his program “Live with Dan Abrams.” The program took over the time slot previously occupied by “Scarborough Country” after Joe Scarborough moved to morning programming. This show underwent a transformation and was eventually renamed “Verdict with Dan Abrams,” airing until August 21, 2008. MSNBC announced on August 19, 2008, that Rachel Maddow would take over the time slot starting September 8, 2008.

He then expanded his responsibilities with NBC News, including substituting as an anchor on the Today show. Following these developments, he launched his own media company, which included Mediaite and other affiliated sites. In March 2011, he departed from NBC to assume the role of Chief Legal Analyst for ABC News. He also occasionally served as a substitute anchor on Good Morning America. ABC News later announced in June 2013 that he would take on the positions of Chief Legal Affairs Anchor and anchor for Nightline. However, he relinquished his full-time role as Nightline anchor in December 2014 to concentrate on the growth of his media ventures.

Additionally, he was also returning to his freelance position as the network’s Chief Legal Analyst. By 2020, The Poynter Report recognized Abrams as the preeminent analyst on legal affairs. From October 2016 to June 2020, he served as the host of the A&E show Live PD. The program offered a real-time depiction of police officers on duty across the United States, using dash-cam footage, handheld low-light-capable cameras, and fixed-camera rigs. Alongside analysts Tom Morris Jr. and Sean “Sticks” Larkin, he provided analysis of each incident as it unfolded. Simultaneously, he co-hosted Grace vs. Abrams, a show where he engaged in debates on high-profile crime cases with legal commentator Nancy Grace. In 2019, he also took on the role of producing and hosting Court Cam, a program that provides a glimpse into American courtrooms.

Unfortunately, Live PD was canceled on June 10, 2020, amid protests against police brutality sparked by the killing of George Floyd and the destruction of video footage related to the death of Javier Ambler. On July 19, 2021, Nexstar announced Abrams’ new role as the host of a nightly prime-time show called “Dan Abrams Live” on NewsNation, which premiered on September 27, 2021. On June 8, 2022, the Wall Street Journal revealed that he would return as the host and executive producer for “On Patrol: Live.” Which would be a new show on Reelz following the same format as A&E’s discontinued “Live PD.” The premiere of “On Patrol: Live” took place on July 22, 2022. Additionally, on July 29, 2009, Abrams and Michael Lewittes co-founded Gossip Cop. This is a site dedicated to celebrity gossip, described as a blend of “TMZ meets Smoking Gun.”
