Dale Nelson Biography
Dale Nelson is an American meteorologist working for KRIS as an evening chief meteorologist at 5, 6, 9 and 10 p.m. He joined the KRIS news team in 1981, after previously working for KTIV.
In 1979, Dale was awarded the prestigious American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval, and he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. His professional television career began when he first worked for WCMH in Columbus, as a back-up meteorologist. He then joined KTIV in Sioux City, Iowa, where he worked as the Chief Meteorologist.
He joined KRIS in 1981, and as a Chief Meteorologist, Dale has been recognized for his achievements nearly every year of his career at the station, including the Associated Press “Best Weathercast” and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times “Best of the Best” award – every year since 1995. In addition, Dale likes to give speeches to schoolchildren and civic associations. Along with several local festivals including the George West Storyfest, he participates in fundraising events for the Alzheimer’s Association and Women’s Shelter.

KRIS 6 made announcements on the internet that the chief meteorologist would be retiring on December 29, 2023. Nelson was insistent that he would not retire until after hurricane season when he approached the station earlier this year about doing so.
He was determined to put the needs of his community above his own. Over his 42 years of service in the station, he has covered a handful of hurricanes, including Harvey in 2017. On December 29, the station will honor Nelson’s career with a celebration that will include his farewell forecast on KRIS 6 News at 6:00 p.m.
