Craig Carton Career

In 1991, he earned a broadcast journalism degree from Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and graduated from New Rochelle High School. During his high school years, Carton worked as a play-by-play announcer for several high school athletic events in Westchester County. He also attended a sports broadcasting course taught by the renowned announcer Bob Wolff. He performed as a DJ in a number of Syracuse nightclubs while attending college. Carton was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome in his 30s. June 4, 2013, marked the publication of Carton’s debut book, Loudmouth: Tales (and Fantasies) of Sports, Sex, and Salvation from Behind the Microphone.

In order to combat Tourette syndrome and provide Camp Carton for young people with Tourette syndrome, Carton founded the Tic Toc Stop Foundation in 2013. An annual golf competition and a bowling competition called “Strike Out Tourettes” have been used as a means of raising money. Carton started working as a broadcaster in 1991 at Buffalo’s WGR Radio. Later, in April 1993, he started working at WIP in Philadelphia and WWWE in Cleveland in 1992. Carton filled in for the station’s morning drive show on WIP, where he was a brazen weekend host known by the moniker “The Kid”. Carton moved to Denver from the East Coast and worked primarily at KKFN 950 AM, also known as “The Fan.” He quickly became the highest-rated host in the history of the station when his morning show took off.

After that, he started hosting the most popular local morning show in the market, KBPI’s morning slot. Carton moved out of Denver to take care of his pregnant wife Kim, expecting their first child. Carton took over Scott Kaplan’s spot on WNEW-FM’s Sports Guys morning radio show in New York City towards the end of 2000. He stayed there for a year. With the addition of stunts like an on-air cockfight and “Pastapalooza,” he changed the course of the program. During the September 11, 2001 attacks, Carton and Blain Ensley were doing a live broadcast on WNEW. Carton started co-hosting The Jersey Guys program on WKXW in July of 2002. The program received a nomination for a Marconi Award as the nation’s best mid-market talk show.

In August 2007, Carton left WKXW to take over as co-host of Boomer Esiason’s morning show on New York’s WFAN, where she replaced Imus in the Morning. In less than a year, the Boomer and Carton show became the top-ranked show for men aged 25 to 54 in the Arbitron ratings, a position Imus had not held since 1993. The program aired in simulcast on the MSG Network from 2010 to 2013, and beginning in 2014, on the CBS Sports Network. As the country’s best major-market sports talk show, Boomer and Carton rose to the top of the ratings in New York, received numerous Cynopsis Media awards, and was nominated for numerous Marconi Awards. Carton hosted MMA Uncensored Live on Spike in 2012. A 2013 NBA game featuring the Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards was announced by Carton and Esiason.

It was revealed on October 29, 2020, that Carton would rejoin WFAN and start hosting the afternoon drive Carton & Roberts with Evan Roberts on November 9 (Elijah Benigno retiring). On December 10, 2020, it was also revealed that Carton would talk about problem gambling on his weekly show Hello, My Name Is Craig, which would premiere on Saturday mornings on January 9. The new program was New York City’s highest-rated afternoon drive sports talk show during its first complete ratings book period. While Carton continued to co-host his afternoon show with Roberts on WFAN, he started hosting The Carton Show on Fox Sports 1 in September 2022. Carton announced in June 2023 that he would be leaving WFAN with effect from June 30 in order to concentrate on his new morning show on Fox Sports 1.
