Conor McGregor Biography

Conor McGregor is an Irish professional mixed martial artist and professional boxer. He was the first fighter to win UFC titles in two weight classes at the same time. He rose to fame after starring in the American action film Road House (2024).

Conor McGregor Career

He has been the main attraction at the five most popular UFC pay-per-view (PPV) events, making him the biggest draw in the history of mixed martial arts (MMA). People bought 2.4 million PPV copies of his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. That’s the most ever for an MMA event. More than 5.3 million people in the US and UK bought tickets to see his first professional boxing match, which he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Forbes said that McGregor made $180 million a year, making him the highest-paid athlete in the world. He was also on the list in 2018, when he was ranked fourth and said he made $99 million.

At age 18, McGregor fought his first mixed martial arts match on February 17, 2007, in Dublin. It was an amateur match against Kieran Campbell for the Irish Ring of Truth promotion. He won in the first round by being technically knocked out (TKO). He went pro after the fight and was signed by the Irish Cage of Truth promotion. In 2008, McGregor started working out with John Kavanagh at the Straight Blast Gym (SBG) in Dublin.

McGregor’s first competitive mixed martial arts fight was on March 9, 2008, as a lightweight. He beat Gary Morris with a TKO in the second round. After McGregor’s second fight, which he won over Mo Taylor, he fought his first fight at featherweight and lost by kneebar to Artemij Sitenkov. After beating Stephen Bailey in his next featherweight fight, McGregor thought about going in a different direction with his career. But then his mother called his coach John Kavanagh and encouraged him to keep going with mixed martial arts.

Then, McGregor beat Connor Dillon in his next fight, which was also at featherweight. He then switched back to lightweight for a fight against Joseph Duffy but lost because of an arm-triangle choke. It was his second loss as a professional. After that, McGregor won eight straight fights in 2011 and 2012, during which time he won both the CWFC Featherweight and Lightweight titles, becoming the first professional mixed martial artist in Europe to hold titles in two weight classes at the same time.

People rushed to UFC president Dana White in Dublin, Ireland, in February 2013 to ask him to sign Conor McGregor to the UFC. White was there to receive a Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage from Trinity College. White gave McGregor a deal offer a few days after meeting with him and talking with UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.

McGregor is mostly known as a fighter, and he likes to fight while standing up instead of on the ground. McGregor fights with his left hand and usually stands in the southpaw position, but he often changes to the orthodox position. During his fights, he often tries to be the attacker. Most people think that McGregor’s best skill is boxing since most of his wins came from knockouts or technical knockouts caused by punches. The pull-back left-handed counter that McGregor does is seen by many as his most dangerous move.

McGregor’s signature style outside of the ring is to constantly insult and “psychologically warfare” his opponents. This has earned him the nickname “The Notorious” and comparisons to Muhammad Ali, who McGregor says was one of his early models. McGregor said that “nobody will ever come close to [Ali’s] greatness” after Ali died in June 2016. McGregor has also said that Bruce Lee has inspired him and said that he is like Lee. In the weeks leading up to his fights with Donald Cerrone and Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor was polite to both of them and didn’t talk badly about them. McGregor, on the other hand, talked a lot of trash before his third fight with Poirier.

On June 14, 2017, it was reported that McGregor would be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his first professional boxing match on August 26, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. Mayweather Jr. had never lost before. In the US, the fight was shown on Showtime PPV. In the UK, it was shown on Sky Sports Box Office. The fight took place at super welterweight (154 pounds) with 8-ounce hands. People thought the fight would be the best in the history of boxing.

Mayweather and McGregor were chosen to fight for the WBC Money Belt on August 24, 2017. Nevada’s State Athletic Commission said that Mayweather would get an assured $100 million purse and that McGregor would get $30 million. Three scorecards read 87–83, 89–82, and 89–81 in favor of Mayweather, who won the fight by TKO in the 10th round. Nevada’s State Athletic Commission said that 13,094 tickets sold for the game brought in $55,414,865.79 at the live gate. Because of how well the pay-per-views did, Mayweather is said to have made about $280 million in total, while McGregor made about $130 million.

When McGregor came back from his break to heal his injured leg, it was reported that he would be coaching The Ultimate Fighter 31 for the second time, this time against Michael Chandler. After the season, they will play each other at an event that hasn’t been set yet.

Conor McGregor Record

The highly awaited fight with Aldo was made public at the UFC 183 Q&A on January 30, 2015. McGregor said that he planned to fight Aldo at UFC 189 on July 11, 2015, for the undisputed UFC Featherweight Championship. This was to happen during the UFC’s yearly International Fight Week. Las Vegas, Nevada’s MGM Grand Garden Arena was the site of the fight. The UFC was sure that the fight would go above and beyond predictions, so they spent more money advertising it. Dana White, the president of the company, said, “[the UFC] spent more money promoting Aldo–McGregor than any fight in UFC history.”

The fight with Aldo was announced at UFC 183 on January 30, 2015. McGregor and Aldo then went on a 12-day world tour, visiting eight towns in five countries, including Rio de Janeiro, which is Aldo’s home country, and Dublin, which is McGregor’s home city. There were stops in Rio de Janeiro, Dublin, and other places along the way. On June 23, though, it was said that Aldo had broken a hip and had to pull out of the fight because of it.

McGregor was added to the new plan and will now fight Chad Mendes for the Interim Featherweight Championship. Officially, 16,019 people came to the event, which was the most ever in Nevada. It also raised $7,200,000, which was the most ever for a mixed martial arts event in the United States. Sinéad O’Connor, an Irish singer-songwriter, sang McGregor’s opening song, “The Foggy Dew,” live before the fight. McGregor won the fight by TKO and became the interim UFC featherweight champion. After that, McGregor taught Urijah Faber on UFC’s “The Ultimate Fighter.” The match was won by Faber’s teammate Ryan Hall.

A rematch with Diaz was supposed to happen on July 9 at UFC 200. However, on April 19, the UFC said that McGregor had been pulled from the event because he had not met his media obligations linked to the fight. Then, the fight with McGregor was moved to the following month and was fought again at welterweight at UFC 202. The second fight was won by majority vote (48–47, 47–47, and 48–47). Another “Fight of the Night” award was given to the fight. A record 1,650,000 people bought the event, beating UFC 100’s record as the most popular pay-per-view in UFC history.
