Colin Cowherd Biography
Colin Cowherd is an American sports media personality working for Fox Sports as a host of The Herd with Colin Cowherd. He joined the Fox Sports team in September 2015, after previously working for ESPN.
In 1982, he received his diploma from Westport’s Ocosta High School. Cowherd was an All-Far West Conference guard on the basketball team and a quarterback on the football team during his high school career. At Eastern Washington University, Cowherd shared a room with Jim McElwain, a football player and coach. Cowherd started off as the play-by-play announcer for the Las Vegas Stars, Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
Eventually, he worked as a sports director at Las Vegas’ KVBC, where he won five Nevada Sportscaster of the Year awards. From 1993 to 1995, he worked as a weekend sports anchor for Tampa, Florida’s WTVT. He relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1996, where he worked at KGW-TV as a sports anchor. In 2001, The Herd moved from an afternoon time slot on all-sports radio KFXX to the morning drive time.

Cowherd was chosen in 2003 to take Tony Kornheiser’s place in the late-morning (10 AM–1 PM ET) slot on ESPN Radio. Fox Sports Radio airs Cowherd’s syndicated talk radio program, The Herd with Colin Cowherd. It aired online at ESPNRadio.com and to ESPN Radio affiliates across the country from 2004 to 2015. The Herd added an ESPNU simulcast in 2008. The program includes interviews with well-known analysts and sports celebrities, as well as commentary on current events in the sports world. Cowherd instructed his listeners to “blow up” the sports blog The Big Lead by concurrently visiting its homepage on the April 5, 2007 episode of The Herd. The site went offline for about ninety-six hours because it could not handle the surge in traffic. LeAnne Schreiber, the recently appointed Ombudsman for ESPN, expressed her disapproval of Cowherd’s behavior in a written piece.
When Schreiber reached out to ESPN Radio’s senior vice president Traug Keller, he told him Cowherd wouldn’t be disciplined for the stunt because, at the time, there wasn’t a policy against it. Keller implemented a zero-tolerance policy for similar actions going forward in order to stop this from happening again. Cowherd started hosting Colin’s New Football Show, an ESPN Sunday morning talk show about college and professional football, in the fall of 2013. On July 23, 2015, Cowherd made statements relating the number of Dominican Republic-born baseball players to the purported simplicity of the game.
Some Dominican players, including José Bautista, took offense at the remarks, as did the MLB Players Association. Later that day, USA Today revealed that the MLBPA was thinking about “withholding cooperation” with ESPN and Fox because of their lack of response to the remarks. In reaction to the comments, ESPN declared the next day that it would immediately sever its connection with Cowherd. In the last episode of The Herd, Cowherd gave data about the current status of education in the Dominican Republic based on a number of studies.

Cowherd’s debut book, You Herd Me! I’ll Say It If No One Else Will was released in 2013. Cowherd has stated on his radio program that he spent a few years working on the book part-time. His second book, Raw: My 100%, Grade-A, Unfiltered, Inside Look at Sports, was published in 2015. From 2009 to 2012, he co-hosted the ESPN2 television program SportsNation alongside Michelle Beadle and, subsequently, Charissa Thompson. The program debuted on July 6, 2009. The purpose of SportsNation was to measure “the pulse” of the country. With two options at their disposal, Cowherd and Thompson tried to ascertain which option was the audience’s favorite. Cowherd left the show in December 2012, having announced his departure in September of the same year. January 2013 saw the replacement of Cowherd by Marcellus Wiley.
