Chuck Bell Biography
Chuck Bell is an American meteorologist working for NBC 4 where he forecasts the weather on News4 Today, News4 Midday, NBCWashington.com, and on 103.5 WTOP. He joined the NBC 4 team in October 2003.
He was brought up outside of Atlanta and he gained an interest in weather at a young age. His first and most memorable weather memory was on April 4, 1974, while he was in first grade and he has the opportunity to spend the entire afternoon in the “duck and cover” together with his classmates. Bell joined The University of Oklahoma in 1986 and he graduated in 1990. After years of storm chasing from Texas to South Dakota, he interned at television stations in Boston, Oklahoma City, and Atlanta. In addition, he has made stops in Roanoke, Virginia, Albany, Georgia, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Greenville, South Carolina before joining the NBC 4 team.
Furthermore, some of his most memorable weather events include; the 2003 Hurricane Isabel which flooded the Chesapeake Bay, The “Blizzard of ’96” which left 29″ of snow in the Roanoke Valley, and the March 1993 storm which crippled the Western Carolinas and a better of the East Coast. Chuck can also recall working for KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City when the May 3, 1999 tornado happened. On the same day, central Oklahoma experienced over 60 tornadoes that claimed the lives of 50 people and did 1.9 billion dollars in damage. Together with his co-workers at KOKH, they did a non-stop coverage of the storms for about 9 consecutive hours.
Chuck earned the Governor’s Humanitarian Award for Outstanding Service on June 23, 1999, which was presented to him by Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating. Whenever he is not forecasting, he is an avid distance runner and he has managed to complete the Marine Corps Marathon in DC 3 times and hopes to keep running it every year. Whenever the weather allows him, he enjoys cruising downtown DC in his vintage 1962 Corvette.
