Christine Ahern is an Australian News Correspondent working for 9News as a Melbourne correspondent for the Today Show. She joined the 9News team in 2004, after previously working for ABC.
Christine Ahern Career
The Sunshine Coast native was raised in Caloundra and went to the University of Queensland in Brisbane, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double concentration in journalism. She was named Queensland’s most outstanding journalism student in her last year of study after publishing a series of articles for the school newspaper about the destruction of records pertaining to child abuse at a juvenile detention facility in Brisbane. The claims were later the subject of a Senate investigation.
Christine started her TV career as a researcher for ABC’s Landline program before relocating to Hobart to work as an ABC News sports reporter and presenter. Christine, who has always had a passion for sports and was a Queensland representative swimmer, decided to work for the ABC on TV and radio in Melbourne, the athletic capital. She moved to Channel 9 in 2004 to work as a sports reporter and presenter in the Melbourne newsroom.
Five Olympic Games have been covered by Christine: Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London, and Rio. Also, she has provided coverage from three Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Manchester, and the Gold Coast. She has also covered the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, world championships in swimming and athletics, the Australian Open tennis tournament, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, and numerous AFL Grand Finals and Melbourne Cups.
Christine moved to the Today Show after working for the Channel 9 sports department for five years. She has covered a number of significant news stories here, such as the horrific Queensland floods of 2010, the Black Saturday bushfires, and, more recently, the criminal trials of Cardinal George Pell and wife-killer Borce Ristevski.
She has also had the honor of speaking with some of the biggest celebrities in the world, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham. Christine moved to Los Angeles in 2014 after being hired as the US Correspondent for the Nine Network. She covered the MH17 tragedy from both the United Nations in New York and the Ukraine. She was also the first Australian TV reporter in Ottawa, Canada during the storming of the parliament by a gunman with an ISIS-inspired outfit.
In addition, Christine covered important Hollywood events and walked the red carpet at the Golden Globes and Oscars. Christine made a comeback to Melbourne and the Today Show in 2016. She was recognized with two Quill awards for her coverage of the COVID issue, and this year, her story on the Epping Gardens Aged Care disaster earned her a Walkley award.
