Hurst received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College. Following graduation, Hurst worked as a reporter in Washington state and Roanoke, Virginia, where, at the age of 22, he rose to the position of nightly anchor. He spent seven years there as the anchor of WDBJ-TV’s (CBS) 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. In addition, Hurst covered long-form investigative programs, two of which won regional Edward R. He was a former WDBJ reporter who had been dismissed for disruptive behavior in 2013. Following a five-hour pursuit, Flanagan shot himself while pursuing a car with law enforcement, and he subsequently passed away in a hospital. The shooting led Hurst, to successfully run for a seat in the House of Delegates with a priority to pass gun control legislation.
