Chris Hurst Biography

Chris Hurst is an American anchor and reporter working for 10 Tampa Bay as an evening general assignment reporter at 11 p.m. He joined the 10 Tampa Bay news team in Jan 2024, after previously working as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates for the state’s 12th district.

Chris Hurst Career

Hurst received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College. Following graduation, Hurst worked as a reporter in Washington state and Roanoke, Virginia, where, at the age of 22, he rose to the position of nightly anchor. He spent seven years there as the anchor of WDBJ-TV’s (CBS) 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. In addition, Hurst covered long-form investigative programs, two of which won regional Edward R. Murrow honors, and covered the crime and court beat. It’s difficult to recount his experience without bringing up the 2015 WDBJ on-air shooting that claimed the lives of Adam Ward, the photographer, and Alison Parker, his then-girlfriend and morning reporter.

Shortly after, Hurst returned to the broadcast and assisted in guiding the town through its collective mourning. In the aftermath, Roanoker Magazine named him Roanoker of the Year in recognition of his remarkable transparency. He quit his work in February 2017 and lived off of his funds in order to run for the Virginia House of Delegates. Hurst was the only House of Delegates candidate to earn the endorsement from Everytown for Gun Safety, and the NRA Political Victory Fund gave him a “A” rating. Meanwhile, incumbent Delegate Joseph R. Yost was sponsored by the NRA. Hurst also ran on Medicaid expansion, education, mental health, and LGBT rights.

In November 2017, Hurst was victorious with 54.4% of the vote against Yost. Hurst signed fifteen measures into law in his first tenure in the legislature. He was the Administrative Process and Professions/Occupations Subcommittee Chair for General Laws. In 2018, Hurst received the 2018 Legislative Award from the Virginia League of Conservation Voters. Hurst sponsored a bill in 2019 that would have protected student journalists’ free speech, but it was not approved by a subcommittee. In 2019, he prevailed against Republican opponent Forrest Hite to win reelection. Hurst was stopped for a traffic check on January 26, 2020, and it was discovered that his blood alcohol content (BAC) was 085, over the permitted limit.

He was taken into custody and then released in Christiansburg, Virginia, with a warning. Hurst and a passenger in his vehicle were seen tampering with opposition campaign signs on November 1, 2021, and as a result, Radford police issued a notice to him for driving without a license. When asked about the event, he said he “flipped over a couple of yard signs, took them, put them upside down, and then put them right side up” and expressed regret. When asked about the event, he said he “flipped over a couple of yard signs, took them, put them upside down, and then put them right side up” and expressed regret. Furthermore, to guarantee that the contentious Mountain Valley Pipeline project complies with safety and environmental laws, Hurst attempted to postpone its development and has advocated for the protection of property rights.

He collaborated with colleagues on the other side of the aisle and the Northam administration to enact a transportation package that included funding for improvements to Interstate 81. Hurst aided in the passage of a bill that will convert the last remaining “dry” areas of Virginia to “wet.” He said that the bill would boost economic growth and assist companies who wish to sell alcohol by the drink in avoiding the onerous procedure of obtaining legislative approval.
