Chris Gloninger Biography
Chris Gloninger is an American three-time Emmy award-winning meteorologist working at KCCI-TV where he serves as the chief meteorologist a position he took up in 2021, after replacing Kurtis Gertz.
He gained interest in the weather after Hurricane Bob hit his hometown of Sag Harbor, New York. In 2002, he joined Plymouth State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology in 2006. He also studied at the Millersville University of Pennsylvania where he earned a master’s degree in disaster management, emergency, and crisis. In addition, he interned at NOAA in Upton, New York and at WABC in New York. While he was still in college, he worked at his hometown and as a Fireman in Plymouth, New Hampshire as a Traffic Control Officer.
Furthermore, he delivered a paper on the need for communication between First Responders and Broadcast Meteorologists during the American Meteorological Society’s annual meeting in New Orleans. Gloninger has always felt the need to keep viewers safe thus he earned his MS in Emergency Management from Millersville University. Over the years, he has worked in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Boston,Miami; Rochester, New York; Saginaw, Miami; and Albany, New York. While he worked at WISN, he met his wife Cathy who served as an assistant to the station’s General Manager.
He has covered all kinds of weather from historic ice floes, EF 4 tornadoes, hurricanes, Noreasters, flooding, and blizzards. Chris was sent by the station to cover hurricanes in Texas, Florida, New York, and North Carolina in addition to traveling across the country to cover two Super Bowls. Not long ago, he produced two half hour specials on how Climate Change affects all aspects of life, and established Boston’s first Climate Change series. For his outstanding work as a meteorologist, he has won two NBC Gem awards, three Emmy awards, and Wisconsin Broadcasters Association awards. During his downtime, he enjoys fishing, swimming, kayaking, traveling, and biking.
