Carolyn Clifford is an American seventeen-time Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter who is currently working at WXYZ. She serves as an evening anchor for the 4, 6, and 11 pm newscasts.
Carolyn Clifford Career
The City of Detroit is her native home. She attended Michigan State University where she graduated with a Broadcast Journalism degree. In addition to her studies at the university, she learned mental toughness from the universities Army ROTC.
When she joined the WXYZ team she served as the weekend’s anchor and as a health reporter. Later in May 2002, she started working on the “7 Action News This Morning” alongside Carolyn. In addition, when Carolyn become the co-anchor of 7 Action News at 11 pm, she gave up her daily duties as Channel 7’s Health Reporter.
For thirteen years, she informed Detroiters about the latest developments in medical science and the effects they have on our community. Additionally, she also served as the host of “Healthy Living Sunday” which is a multiple Emmy-nominated half-hour health program.
Previously, she worked at WPGH-TV in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where she served as the 10 pm anchor. She had also worked at WLFL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina where she also served as the 10 pm anchor. Furthermore, while serving as a journalist, she has worked at CBS affiliates in both Florida, Lansing, Michigan, and Orlando.
Furthermore, she was among the journalists selected from across the country and the only news anchor in Michigan to be invited to the White House to interview President Obama about the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2015. In addition, some of her other memorable moments in broadcasting include interviewing; Barbara Walters, Oprah Winfrey, and NBA legends Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Michael Jordan.
Over the years, she has been able to cover everything from hurricanes in North Carolina to former South African President Nelson Mandela’s first visit to Michigan after he was freed from prison. In addition, the YWCA of Western Wayne County named her “Woman of the Year.” Additionally, for her community and volunteer work in the Metro Detroit area, the Detroit City Council and Detroit Urban League honored her.
She has always wished to dance on Broadway and as a lifelong dancer, she performed in both the MSU Motion Dance Team and the Michigan State Dance Company before her graduation. In addition, whenever she can find time, she speaks at area schools and community organizations.
Her favorite quote is by Martin Luther King Junior in 1963, when he stated “The ultimate measure of a man or woman is not where he or she stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he or she stands at times of challenge and controversy.” During her leisure time, she enjoys spending ample time with her family and volunteering in our community.
