Valencia earned a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Arizona in 2018. Her love of telling stories about politics, social justice, and immigrant communities was influenced by her upbringing on the border. Before joining the Spectrum News team, Valencia reported at KYMA/Telemundo 3 in Yuma, Arizona, where she won an Associated Press Award and a Rocky Mountain Emmy Award for her reporting. From 2016 to 2017, Valencia worked as an intern at KOLD13, the ABC affiliate station in Tucson, Arizona Area. There, she was the Spanish reporter for the newly created smartphone app which was introduced in the summer of 2016. The 2016 presidential election coverage was one of the internship’s highlights.
Valencia shared a touching story about Sheyla Castillo, a 10-year-old Guatemalan girl, in one of her speeches. After a year and six court battles, Sheyla and her mother went to the border, where she was given refuge in the United States. After relocating to Virginia, Sheyla met up with her relatives and began attending school. She even became a member of the soccer team and learned English. However, her dreams were cut short when she was deported. Carmen is motivated to continue with this story, which made her aware of the flaws in the immigration system.
Furthermore, as a longstanding member of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Valencia takes great pride in her membership. Valencia not only reports for the University of Southern California, but she also teaches broadcast journalism as an adjunct professor. During her spare time, she enjoys searching for new coffee shops, hiking, traveling, and hanging with her dog Flor.
