Nicholasville, Kentucky, is McCreary’s native home, and she was brought up with strong Bluegrass roots. Her family is spread throughout the mountains of rural eastern Kentucky. Her interest in weather began as an intense fear, as she had watched The Wizard of Oz as a child. As a result of this, tornadoes became one of her biggest fears. The devastating eastern Kentucky floods of 2022 made thousands lose their homes, including Carlyn’s grandparents. In addition, McCreary experienced tornadoes near her campus.
