In 1995, Peña received her diploma from Haverhill High School located in Haverhill, Massachusetts. After a year, Peña returned home and studied electrical engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, having previously attended Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He participated in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL), which presents elite amateur prospects each summer, as a collegiate player.

Peña served in the Major League for 14 years and was named an American League All-Star in 2009. He can be seen in various MLB Network shows, such as the Emmy Award-winning MLB Tonight, the Spring Training series 30 Clubs in 30 Days, and season-long special event coverage. In December 2014, Peña began working with MLB Network as a guest analyst after first appearing there in the 2009 and 2014 postseasons.

Peña, who won the 2008 Gold Glove Award, finished his career with 286 home runs and 818 RBI. In six different seasons, Peña hit more than 25 home runs, including 46 in 2007, when he won both the AL Comeback Player of the Year Award and the Silver Slugger Award for American League first basemen. In 2001, Peña made his debut with the Texas Rangers, where he spent his final season as a designated hitter and first baseman.
