Brit Hume is an American author and political analyst working for FOX NEWS as a chief political analyst. He joined the FOX NEWS news team in 1996, after previously working for ABC NEWS.
Brit Hume Career
Hume attended St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., alongside Al Gore, and graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1965. He began his career working for The Hartford Times newspaper company. Later, he also worked for United Press International and the Baltimore Evening Sun newspaper. From 1970 to 1972, Hume worked for syndicated columnist Jack Anderson. In 1971, Grossman Publishers published his first book, “Death and the Mines: Rebellion and Murder in the United Mine Workers.” The book focuses on the mistreatment of miners involving the U.S. Bureau of Mines, coal companies, and the United Mine Workers Union.
He gained attention for reporting on the contribution of $400,000 by ITT Corporation to the 1972 Republican National Convention. His story revealed that President Richard Nixon’s Department of Justice settled an antitrust case against ITT. This investigation led to classified documents indicating Nixon’s administration favoring Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The revelations resulted in CIA surveillance of Anderson, Hume, and their families in 1972. In 1973, he became the Washington editor of MORE magazine, a press criticism journal. In 1974, Doubleday published his second book, “Inside Story.”
Concurrently, he began working for ABC News as a consultant in 1973, eventually becoming a correspondent in 1976, covering the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate for 11 years. In 1979, he received television’s first Academy Award nomination for his work on ABC’s Close-Up documentary program, specifically for “The Killing Ground.” He reported on Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign and George H. W. Bush’s 1988 presidential campaign. In 1989, he became ABC’s chief White House correspondent, covering the administrations of Presidents Bush and Bill Clinton, and collaborating closely with ABC anchors Peter Jennings and Charlie Gibson.
He made a significant career move by leaving ABC to join the Fox News Network in 1996, where his wife had recently been appointed as the chief of the Washington bureau. His departure from ABC was marked by commendation from President Clinton during his last news conference as ABC’s chief White House correspondent. Clinton praised Hume for his extraordinary and professional job covering both Republican and Democratic administrations. Upon joining Fox News, he assumed the role of Washington managing editor. In May 2020, he garnered attention for criticizing Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, for wearing a face mask during the coronavirus pandemic, while suggesting that it was positive for President Donald Trump not to wear one. Later in September 2020, he made a claim about Biden, stating that he was “senile.”
During the 2020 United States Presidential election, he joined fellow Fox News contributors Chris Wallace, Juan Williams, and Dana Perino in providing election night coverage. This was alongside hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. Their election coverage secured a victory in the Nielsen ratings for that night.
