Brett Goldstein is an English Award-winning film and television actor, writer, producer, podcaster, and comedian best known for Ted Lasso (2023), Thor (2022), Harley Quinn (2023), and Doctor Who (2018). He rose to fame after starring in the sports comedy-drama Ted Lasso (2020-2023).
Brett Goldstein Career
Goldstein started out acting in short films. His first part in a full-length movie was Wish You Were Here (2005) which is a thriller he wrote himself. This movie was later made into Slave (2009). In 2009, he made his TV debut in two episodes of The Bill. It is an ITV police thriller that has been on for a long time. From 2012 to 2016, he was in several comedy shows including Uncle on BBC One, Drifters on E4, and Derek on Channel 4. All of these shows were written and directed by Ricky Gervais. He also played Danny, David Hasselhoff’s trainer, on Dave’s fake documentary show Hoff the Record (2015–2016).
Goldstein wrote and played the lead part of a Peckham postman. He became a superhero in the low-budget romantic comedy SuperBob (2015), which came out in 2013. When filming was over, comedian Catherine Tate, who played his character’s boss at the Ministry of Defense, asked him to co-write and guest star in Catherine Tate’s Nan. A BBC One sitcom based on her popular sweary old lady character Joanie Taylor. The show ran from 2014 to 2015. In 2016, Goldstein joined Tate on her first live show. Later, she co-wrote the movie The Nan Movie (2022). He also co-wrote a 2021 Comic Relief sketch with Daniel Craig as James Bond.
Goldstein was hired as a writer by TV director Bill Lawrence for the 2020 Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso, which stars Jason Sudeikis. Because of his writing on the show, he was chosen as Roy Kent, an old football player. Zemler of Rolling Stone wrote that Goldstein “felt such a bond with this stoic tough guy that he emailed a self-taped audition of five scenes to the production team.”
The tapes, which had the pilot scene where he said, “If I don’t hear silence, I’m going to start punching dicks,” got him the part. “What happened after that is history.” After that, he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for two years in a row, from 2021 to 2022.
Goldstein and Will Bridges, who writes for Black Mirror, created and wrote the six-part science fiction variety series Soulmates for AMC. It was based on their short film For Life. Sarah Snook, Malin Akerman, Betsy Brandt, and Charlie Heaton were in the first episode of the show, which aired in October 2020. He got a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Television in 2022. Later that year, Goldstein played Hercules in a scene during the credits of Thor: Love and Thunder. The actor is likely to play the role again in other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
