Ben Smith Biography
Ben Smith is an American two-time Emmy award-winning meteorologist working for News 19 as the morning meteorologist on This Morning. He joined the News 19 weather team in April 2010, after previously working for WSAV-TV.
Smith is a certified broadcast meteorologist whose native home is Fredericksburg, Virginia. His interest in weather began in grade school when he would track snowstorms up the east coast and while in high school, he did the weather on the morning announcements. After graduating from high school, he joined East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications and a minor in Geography in 1996.
Later on, Smith secured his first on-air job at WNCT-TV in Greenville, North Carolina where he served as a weather anchor for a period of 5 years. During his time at WNCT-TV, he also went back to study at Mississippi State University where he received a certificate in broadcast meteorology. Furthermore, Ben has also worked in Chattanooga and Birmingham, where he served as a meteorologist for WIAT from 2001 to 2003. While working in Savannah, Georgia at WSAV, he served as the chief meteorologist for four years. Later on, he joined WFTV in Orlando, Florida where he served as a meteorologist.
In addition, he has been involved in the direct landfills of a number of hurricanes such as; Dennis, Bertha, Fran, Bonnie, and Floyd in 1999. For the continuous coverage of Hurricane Floyd, Ben was awarded the prestigious National Edward R. Murrow Award alongside the WNCT staff. Furthermore, Smith holds seals of approval from the National Weather Association, the American Meteorological Society, and the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) seal of approval as well. Ben is also a seal evaluation committee member of the National Weather Association.
