Ayman Mohyeldin Career

Mohyeldin attended North Cobb High School in Kennesaw, Georgia. For his undergraduate education, he enrolled at American University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in international relations with a focus on the European Union. Subsequently, he pursued a Master of Arts (MA) degree in international politics with a specialization in Peace and Conflict Resolution. His graduate thesis, titled “The News Media Paradigm in the War on Terrorism,” was accepted by the International Association of Media Researchers Conference in Barcelona, Spain, in 2002. Following his academic pursuits, he worked as a foreign news producer with CNN, residing in Iraq from 2003 to 2005. This experience marked a significant period in his career as he contributed to the network’s coverage of news and events in the region during that time.

Mohyeldin commenced his journalism career at NBC, initially working as a desk assistant for the Washington D.C. bureau. His career took a significant turn following the events of 9/11 when, due to a shortage of individuals with language skills or expertise in the Middle East, he found himself thrust into major assignments. In an interview with PRWeek, he reflected on the opportunities that arose after 9/11, stating that his language skills and timing led to him working on substantial pieces related to investigating 9/11 and international terrorist connections. Despite his initial role primarily involving translation, he also contributed to developing themes or story threads requiring Arabic language skills.

His coverage extended to major news events in the Arab World and the Middle East, including the Iraq War, Egypt’s first multi-candidate presidential elections in 2005, Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the 2005 Palestinian elections in Gaza. He reported on significant incidents like the Sharm al-Sheikh resort bombing (July 2005) and the Jordan Hotel bombings (November 2005). As a producer, Mohyeldin achieved notable milestones. He became the first journalist to enter one of Libya’s nuclear research facilities after producing Col. Muammar al-Gaddafi’s announcement about Libya abandoning all WMD programs. His work in the CNN documentary “Iraq: progress report” received an Emmy Award nomination. Additionally, he served as an associate producer for NBC News Specials which earned Emmy nominations.

In 2008–2009, he covered the Israeli attack on Gaza and reported on the intricate network of tunnels along the Egyptian-Gaza border, vital for smuggling weapons and supplies into Gaza. His coverage of the Israeli attack, along with Sherine Tadros, was documented in the film “The War Around Us.” In 2011, he transitioned from Al Jazeera English back to NBC. He extensively covered the second “Arab Uprising” in Egypt in 2013, the unrest in Ukraine, and more recently, the unrest in Iraq. His multifaceted career showcases his dedication to reporting on significant global events, particularly in the Middle East and Arab world. Since joining NBC News in 2011, he has been a versatile host on MSNBC, leading several shows. Notably, he hosted First Look, an early-morning show, and Ayman Mohyeldin Reports (originally MSNBC Live with Ayman Mohyeldin), a weekday afternoon program.

In September 2021, Mohyeldin’s program he took over the weekend evening spot previously held by Joshua Johnson’s The Week with Joshua Johnson. The show also streams on Peacock on Fridays. Concurrently, Hallie Jackson took over his weekday afternoon slot. In addition to his regular shows, he serves as a fill-in guest host on various MSNBC programs, including All In with Chris Hayes, Deadline: White House, The Beat with Ari Melber, The Rachel Maddow Show, and Alex Wagner Tonight. After the 2021 United States Capitol attack, his personal connection to the tragedy emerged when he received a call from a high school classmate in Kennesaw, Georgia, whose sister-in-law, Rosanne Boyland, died in the attack. This led Mohyeldin to investigate the circumstances surrounding Boyland’s death and the rapid radicalization of a previously apolitical individual during the summer of 2020.
