Audie Cornish Biography
Audie Cornish is an American anchor working for CNN as an anchor and correspondent and the host of The Assignment, a CNN Audio podcast. She joined the CNN news team in February 2022, after previously working for NPR.
Audie Cornish Career
Cornish graduated from Randolph High School. Subsequently, she graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with a degree in journalism where she interned with NPR and worked with campus radio station WMUA. She began her professional career at Associated Press as a Boston Bureau – Reporter in 2001. Here, she was general assignment reporting for Massachusetts news wire and sports wire briefs including post-Sept. 11 memorials, congressional elections, and Boston city news.
Later she joined WBUR as a political reporter in 2001. Some of her memorable coverage while here were; breaking news stories on the legalization of same-sex marriage, Big Dig Investigations and the city preparations for the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and Catholic Sex Abuse Scandal, city hall and Beacon Hill. Moreover, she also did live in-studio reporting for nationally distributed programs “On Point” and “Here and Now”. In 2006, she joined the NPR news team as a reporter, National Desk/ 2008 Elections Team. She was with the team for fifteen years.
In August 2017, Cornish announced that she would take leave from NPR during her maternity leave. During her leave, she published occasional interviews in The New York Times Magazine All Things Considered has an audience of 14 million listeners per week. Following her resignation from NPR in early 2022, Cornish tweeted, “I look forward to new opportunities and new ways to tell stories and to keep finding ways to make space and center the voices of those who have been traditionally left out.
On November 17, 2022, Cornish’s weekly podcast The Assignment with Audie Cornish released its premiere episode. The Assignment, “pulls listeners out of their digital echo chambers to hear from the people who live the headlines,” and received the “Best Interview Podcast” award at the 2023. In the course of her career, she has been recognized and awarded with numerous awards. Some of these awards include; the Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism by the National Press Foundation, the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and the George Foster Peabody Award.
